I have an Intel pentuim dual cpu @ 2 Ghz. 3 gigs of ram and a nvidia 9500 gt gpu. How much would a new cpu improve my performance?

And the only 2 pc games I have right now are cod 4 and cod waw, but they run pretty choppy. But I think my gpu is fine for those games.

yeah your GPU is fine for those games but don't expect to run them all maxed out or anything. so does your cpu use the socket 775 interface? and what is your budget for a new CPU? :)

It says Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00 Ghz 2 .00 Ghz under my computer. I don't really know how to find out the socket interlace. Would I see noticable improvement if I upgraded to a faster cpu? And i was looking around on newegg and saw some 3 Ghz dual cpu's for around 70$.

considering the info (or lack thereof) he has given already, what is the likelyhood that he'll know waht a socket type is....but yeah right now u'll get more performance increse from a new GPU, unless u really have a Pentium D instead of a more recent Intel Pentium Dual core (ie e5400, etc)

Assuming your motherboard will support it, I suggest upgrading to an E8400. Then save a little money and upgrade to a 4870. You will more than double your gaming performance and only spend around $300 total and be able to play games at very good framerates with high graphics settings.

Some faster intel dual core cpu doesn't support by old Motherboard such P965 or P945... I recommend you upgrade your GPU, for around $50-60 you can get 4670 and this GPU is twice better than 9500gt...

Don't worry, if kungfool knew any more than you tyler he would have mentioned that your processor is socket 775.
Overclock the CPU (although given this thread I'm going to put my money on you don't know how.) a bit and upgrade your video card. Unless you want to buy an updated computer, that will be the biggest improvement to your system. But as mentioned in other people's replies you won't be hitting max grahpics with a 9500 regardless of the CPU. Ideal thing to do would be to update your entire system. Your CPU has a FSB of only 800MHz and since you're running a Pentium I'm going to assume your board can only handle up to 800MHz. Also given that you have 3GB of RAM you're probably running older 800MHz single gig sticks and not dual channel. You probably won't see much of a performance increase until you get a new system sorry to say.

i had to say what i said because its not uncommon on here for people to have Pentium D's still and its also not uncommon for people to get teh Pentium d's confused with the lower end (but still very good) Intel Pentium Dual Cores if all they have heard of are Core 2 duos.ur better off still just upgrading ur GPU once u can't stand choppy frames per second. personally if i was u and couldt afford a complete system change, iwould look at a ati 5750 if u can stretch. other upgrades u can do that can stretc hur unit out are a matched pair of 2gb ddr2 sticks (making 4gb dual channel, if ur mobo has dual channel). also a faster spinning hard drive or a higher grade hard drive with a larger cache. if ru get a better hdd, at least u can carry that over later for ur next build.

Yeah the e2180 does have an LGA 775 socket.

You should upgrade your GPU first. But if you really wanna get a new CPU, here's a great Core 2 quad that's $150 (USD) and will eat up any game you throw at it. GPU wise I would grab a 5770. They are great for the price, very OC-able and give you the ability to max most games.
