I was just wondering if upgrading a processor was the same as upgrading motherboards. I know that once an OS is installed on a motherboard you need to buy another OS disk if you plan to install a new motherboard is it the same for processors?

P.S. With the new ture quadcores coming out in the next couple of months will they be using the same socket type (LGA 775)?

The OS is stored on the Hard Drive. And upgrading a processor will not require you to reinstall the OS.

Nah, if anything goes wrong you can always call up M$ and they will give you a new one. You can always make up excuses too, like saying my processor stopped working so I HAD to get this one because the retailer was out of stock etc.

when I upgraded my mobo, ram and cpu, windows said I had to ring up ms for a new code, I rang them up and asked for a new code, they asked why I needed 1.

I just told them the truth, I said I just upgraded some bits in my pc and windows said 1 needed a new code and said to ring them up. they asked for the code that the pc tells you ms will need, I told them it and they gave me a new code straight away ;)

As for if you will need a new code after changing your cpu, I shouldnt think so. :)

Intel quad cores came out a while ago, and luckily they still run on LGA775. Upgrading a mobo is different than upgrading a processor, although many people need to upgrade a mobo when upgrading a CPU. I happens usually when I person switches from Athlon to Intel, or vice-versa. The OS is stored in a hard drive, not the mobo.
