I used to play City of Heroes/Villains a long time ago but something in my life changed that. I won't go into that.

But after COH/V, I got into Guild Wars, which I am currently playing. The bad thing is that it's getting repetitive b/c I hate that once you get to LVL 20 you can't go any further (hopefully that will change in GW2, I don't think it is). So after last nights South Park episode ripping on WOW, it got me interested. But before I pay to play another MMORPG, I wanted to get everyones opinion on the pros and cons of WOW.

So my question is, What are the Pros and Cons of World of Warcraft? I want to know everything, character build, environment, leveling, gameplay, graphics, and I would like to know one thing in particular, if you get new armor and new weaponry, does it show?

Pros:
-Easy to start
-Unlimited gameplay
-Interesting economy
-Awesome dungeons
-Good pace; it is easy to level, but it takes long enough
-Large world
-Decent Player versus Player
-Awesome Player versus Environment
-Good community
-Large community
-Inexpensive on a per-hour basis relative to other games

Negatives:
-Can be addictive
-Makes other games seem dull, believe it or not.
-Monthly fee, though this is arguably a pro considering I get 15 bucks a month for limitless gameplay, versus 50 bucks a game for 10 hours of gameplay
-Social stigma "Oh my gawd you play WoW? What a loser...why dont you play Halo 3 instead?" :?

Cons 1. You spend $20-30 to buy the game, then $20-30 a piece for both expansion packs....now you're out $60-90. 2. A monthly fee - means you're spending extra cash to play a game that you've already paid for I'd say see if you can find a free trial version (it's like 15-30 days or something like that) and see if you even like the game. Then decide from there if you feel the absolute need to continue with it.

Pros: Can't think of any.

Cons:

Constant grinding and farming for everything (gear, gold, etc.)

Many, many, time-sinks

Non-existent or poorly integrated story/lore

Immature community

Boring quests

If you want to know what it's like to be a hamster on a wheel -- this is the game for you

Carrot on a stick gameplay

Graphics are garish

P.S. The addiction argument is silly. Don't listen to anybody who says that. I've played many MMORPG's over the past 15 years and none of them are addictive. If you really think they're addictive I would suggest visiting a methadone clinic or other rehab site where people deal with REAL addictions.

Saying that is kind of like saying that gambling is not an addiction for some people who obviously have problems.

What actually happens, same with gambling addicts, is the person completes some task and they enjoy the reward - release of endorphins and other chemicals in the brain - and that person has to get that feeling again. So they keep playing to achive that goal - or in a gambling addicts case, they keep playing until they win and get that rush of a good feeling.

It's kind of like smoking. Smoking in itself is not addicting, it's the nicotine (and whatever other chemicals are used) that you get hooked on. Your body enjoys that feeling and you get the urge to keep satisfying that urge.

There are other things that are hard to break away from when you feel like you are addicted to WoW: belongingness/acception, those sort of things.

Well for me the biggest pro is the length. I actually bought WoW becouse I was insanely mad after passing Mirrors Edge and FEAR 2. The two games together cost more that WoW Battlechest and 2 months subscription. Do you know how long the two games were? Together it took me 11h to pass them...Not to mention that both games have absolutely terrible endings. Anyway WoW is good becouse it is accesible. You can play it in groups or even alone. So far I have been running around solo. 70h in my character is only lvl 30 and the game is still interesting. Auction House works well and its easy to get money for anything you might want. The graphics are really nice I thought. I love how colorful everything is and all the different areas. The only thing I didnt like so far was having to be lvl 30 to buy a mount. The world is huge and going on foot everwhere get a bit tedious even with the help of flightpaths.

I played it for like 2 years straight, the only reason i quit was because i simply dont have time to play it anymore i mean in WoW you wont do anything and i mean ANYTHING in 2 or 3 hours. you need to have a lot of free time for that game.

South Park wasn't ripping on the game, it was about the stereotypes that surround the game. Blizzard helped Trey Parker and Matt Stone create the episode.

Pros

Great art style

Great music

Great PVE content

Lots of added content

Competitive PvP

Cons

Takes a lot of time for PvE

Lots of grinding

Well, it's certainly clear you have a high tolerance against World of Warcraft judging by your history on the boards bud. However, what I don't understand is how you label WoW community as immature? From my experience, the community is of a younger audience thus creates this competitive competition environment seen in many other online focus games. Of course you are always going to have your real bad apples out of bunch, but immature is not the case here, rather you just can't tolerate a young audience in a online focused game. The WoW community is one of the best out there when you understand how to maneuver through and out to more sources that are apart of the community entirely.

The pro's and con's as I remember it.

pro:

  • The art direction is strong enough that even the ridiculous looking epic armor looks like it fits in with everything else.
  • There is a wide varity of terrains. The game world has everything from snow covered mountains to lush forests. There is even a jungle in a giant crater full of dinasaurs.
  • Lots of flexiblity in character development.
  • Blizzard listens to your suggestions and will add the good ones to the game.
  • Very easy to get started.
  • All professions have something all classes can use.
  • There are some truely epic and memorable quests.

con:

  • The game requires a lot of time.
  • Most quests are dull and repetative. Its so bad that in about 20 min you've seen 85% of the game as far as quests are concerned.
  • Manufacturing professions are even worse. Once you've done one pattern you'll know what you will be doing the entire time. If you decide to play and take a professions then I strongly recommend herbalism/alchemy. I found this to be the most useful combo in the game and the only one worth the effort.
  • Other players have no imagination. There are far too many who will try and tell you that you can only play your charater in one way.
  • Other players who are there because its the "hot" MMO right now but don't want to take the time to actually play. These are the clowns who play real world money for gold farmer and power leveler services. This has lead to some serious issues with gold farmers hassling other players in an attempt to drum up customers.

Pros

  • Fun gameplay especially when playing with friends
  • High quality MMO, once you go WOW every other MMO pales in comparison IMO.
  • The atmosphere easily sucks you in the world of Azeroth; is so much better when you've played the previous WC RTS games and have a familar understanding of the story lore.

Cons

  • Can be very addicting as many have said, if you're not careful.
  • 15 dollar a month subscription fee
  • Community can be at times filled with immature pricks.

Most of the people who just list cons havent even played it.....The whole no life thing is stupid, thats about yourself managing your time not the games fault. Its one of the best games ever made and thats why their are more players than any other game out their right now.

pro's

fun, entertaining rpg. If you like rpg's you will love it

always updated with patches

very community driven for raids and such

Con's

Timesink

PVP very unbalanced 3 classes can faceroll almost all the time no matter what patches come out

WOTLK content pretty meh IMO.

if you are on a pvp server many people on the other faction will kill you right in the middle of a quest for no reason

I guess you could add this to the pros list too then since you could play one of those 3 classes.

njean777

It's meant to be this way. Don't like it? Play on a PvE realm.

Thank you all for your suggestions. After downloading the trial version, playing about 30 minutes of WoW, I can give my honest oppinion, I'm probably not going to like it. I didn't like the character build in the begining, I didn't like the buttons ( I hear unless you have a WoW keyboard, it is pretty difficult for newbs), and I didn't really like the gameplay. So to all of you's that replied to my post, thank you for your time.

IF you are mature enough (ie. 20+) you will be accepted into WoW without a problem by the communtity... IF you are not mature, leave... I don't want you joining my pugs....

WoW can be a very fulfilling experience, but indeed you can't let it take over your life, as it can certainly be addicting. I suppose that's the biggest con.

Irish, why are you on this forum, games have no benefit to life at all, they're for entertainment.

And I love it when people exaggerate on how much effect it has on you. you'll only become addicted if it lets you become addicted. When I played, I didn't lost friends, I had one computer with one account, I wasn't obese, I wasn't a nerd, I didn't go insane.
