PSU debate

Hi, I'm thinking about 2 PSUs to upgrade SeaSonic M12II 520 EVO or CM RS550.

Both PSUs are modular - I currently have cable management issues since my side panel isn't as thick.

SeaSonic give 5 years warranty while CM gives only 3.

I have R9 290 which I'm going to OC and 2 water pump (H60 and Arctic 120).

Will the 520W be enough for me? I currently use CX500 which I have for over 5 years and when my GPU reaches 100% peak load my system crush, I forgot to calculate capacitor aging.

Corsair VS650 +80 or FSP HEXA 700?

With the R9 290 I would go up 100W on those PSU... Anyhow I would check out who the OEM is. I assume Seasonic has made their PSU, but CM I think has rebranded one from a different maker. I don't have the time to do so now =/ But 500-550W isn't much when you are powering R9 290 which you want to OC. Does the 290 you got have 6+8 pin or 8+8 pin contacts?

And just check out the EVGA G2 550 or 650W models.

8+8, capacitors are aging at 10% of their efficiency per year, so...

We don't have EVGA PSUs around the country sadly, and yes SeaSonic is OEM

Seasonic is rock solid. Can't go wrong with them.

With PSU you want to have head room if you want the PSU to last more than 5 years. Rule of thumb you want to keep the psu usage at or below 80% at peak load. Also have to take in account of aging.

With a 290 and a cpu with 100w TDP your already at 75% with 500w not including fans/pumps, hdds, etc. Your better off getting a 650w psu at least. Now if you get a 750w or 850w you have a very good chance in getting a decade out of PSU. EVGA G2 supernovas 750w/850w come with a 10 year warranty they are gold rated and are fully modular.

I could try to oder from Amazon but I'm not sure. I can get FSP which is one of their OEM, 700Watt Hexa but then again - it's not modular.

G2 Supernovas are high quality and come with 10 year warranty too.

Does their warranty is global? since it's not for sell anywhere in my country?

Nice, I'll try to order the G2 750 since it's Fully Modular, 10 years warranty and basically at the same price point of my other PSUs at my country, plus I get Gold rated,

I always suggest those series here to other people, never thought I'd be concidering getting one for myself XD

I bought a G2 850w a few months ago even though my 8 year old Corsair TX750 was was still going strong I decided to replaced it because of age. Its now a backup psu if needed.

All the G2, P2 and T2 series are solid. However if one want a silent build, I recommend going for a P2 or T2 if one needs 1000W or more as there is no semi fan less mode on the G2 series when going 1000W and above. I also think the G2 1000, 1300 and 1600 are the oldest ones in that series, as the lower ones have semi fanless mode.

@horgen: there is semi fanless mode on G2 , with eco mode on G2's "operated in silent, fan-less mode at low to mid power levels. Once the cooling fan did start to spin the noise was noticeable but not loud."

@04dcarraher: That mode isn't there on G2 1000W and above. I know, I got the G2 1300W and there is no such mode on it. They can have updated it today, I don't know. The fan they have put in is powerful. Lowest rpm is 1000-1100 or so. Probably goes up to 2500 so. It's the only thing I dislike about my rig atm. But I use it for folding and still haven't configured the fans to my liking so I don't hear the PSU fan yet.

@horgen@04dcarraher quick update: since I managed proper cable management, and I do not plan to waste alot of money (G2 after taxes etc cost as much as 750Ti /R7 370 here), I'm debating now between 2 models: Corsair VS650 +80 and FSP HEXA 700, both cost the same and sadly both have no reviews what so ever, both got 3 years warranty, both models are lowest budget for both brands. I lean torward to FSP since I currently own Corsair CX and I want to try some new.

You could take out current fan and replace it with Noctua one, just needs a little bit of modding / welding

Hence why I think the G2 1000 and above are older. Also most people who have use for them also have enough fans to drown out the PSU fan... I only got myself to blame for not checking that. P2 1000 would have been plenty enough for me. The upside is I got a PSU I can use for 5 years easily though.

No wielding necessary. I have looked it up and unless I remember wrong, I only need a adapter from regular 3 pin to small 3 fan contact.
