1) Punkbuster runs 2 background processes on your computer 24/7 once its installed. And then occasionally a third once your ingame. This is completely unnecessary. 2) Punkbuster often won't fully update itself. So you'll log onto Battlefield 2 and Punkbuster will kick you (without telling you why). If you know your way around though, you'll have to go to Punkbuster's website to manually download the updates. 3) Punkbuster sometimes just doesn't work. Lots of people are kicked for no reason whatsoever and even I had a period where I couldn't play a few games online without consistently getting dropped. It doesn't bother me too much - but I much prefer VAC. Obviously it can't be implemented into all games, but it's much better.

there is no good anti-cheat system out there except for server admins. Punkbuster is crap, VAC takes like 3 months to catch somebody, GuardianShield (or whatever its called) breaks too often making games not even start.

Just find a good server with active admins and play there

I think the way Vac works is genius. It doesn't catch people instantly on purpose. That way hackers can't alert each other if a particular hack has been caught. Then they get screwed over.

Punkbuster allows people to play the game hack free unless ofcourse, the hack hasn't been discovered yet. You are considered uneligable to play unless you have it installed and updated. In order to update PB it's automatic but can also be manual. I've tried manually updating PB becuase it wasn't kind enough to be implamented into the game for my convenience. I've done this before and it worked, but sometimes it doesn't. I don't know why.

There are massive online games that don't have PB that work just as good. Take "World in Conflict" for instance. When you are banned from a server by an ADMIN, who either owns the server or has extensive rights to the server, your IP address is blocked from that server. You can't just remake an account to get in.

PB needs to have some sort of attachment in the game. Such as Call of Duty 4. There should be an option in BOLD letters saying, "CLICK HERE FOR PUNKBUSTER AUTOMATIC UPDATE." Then... every time you launch your game, it will search for new updates which should ALWAYS get you into the server unless previously banned by PB I don't know how that works. Since even though I update PB and my CoD4, it still wont let me into the servers. This is a constant battle I have it might have somethng to do with Vista. Even after I run the programs under Admin. I think PB should either fix their stupid problems or let someone else do what they do. It's so unorganized.

Yes Punkbuster is evil but it is a NECESSARY evil. The only reason companies use Punkbuster/VAC is because the players demanded an in game anti cheat system be used. I remember when Call of Duty 2 was released for the PC without Punkbuster. All the server admins got together and took down their servers for an entire weekend. I remember that weekend, Usually there were thousands upon thousands of servers to choose from. That specific weekend there was like 20. They released a patch that utilized PB shortly after. I remember playing Counterstrike pre vac for 2 whole days before giving up and quitting because there was no such thing as a legit game. But you do you have an option, you don't have to install Punkbuster and just not play on servers that use Punkbuster. You can also play on non VAC secured servers. The only problem is these servers are few and far between and are full of cheaters. There is a reason for this!!!!! Running a server is a nightmare when it comes to cheater as it is. I couldn't imagine how bad it would be without any sort of anti-cheat system at all. Oh wait, yes I can because I was playing games before anti cheat systems were even thought of yet. I refused to play online for a long time but a lot of people I know used cheats just to combat the cheaters. It was a downward spiral and catch 22 from hell.

PnkBstrA and PnkBstrB, they always run, but I don't really care and there isn't a 3rd application that starts when you play a game, it's just these two.

Not a big problem to a lot of people, but some of us out here like to keep their processes count low and their memory a little more free. Punkbuster doesn't have to run 24/7 - so why does it choose to?

This is true....although the memory those two files are using is totally meaningless, it still shouldn't run when Punkbuster is not being used....

It adds up. There's a billion other programs that want to have their own process in the background for no good reason. The average gamer who doesn't look at their processor count probably accumulates 50+ processes over a year's amount of time - greatly slowing down bootup times and taking up an extra 50-300 mb of RAM. Keeping on top of your processes lets you know what's going on in your computer at all times. Let's you spot keyloggers, trojans, etc.
