The MSI 890GXM-G65 board doesn't support the new x6 processors out of the box (you need to update the bios). That being said, if you install a x6 processor before the update, will it boot into windows so that you can install the new bios? Or will you have to purchase a cpu that's currently supported (beore the bios update) and update the bios?

I don't think it will even get past the BIOS screen or even SHOW it if it can't detect the CPU that it has.

it might work, who knows... My current system is like that, I have a Phenom X4 on an AM2, not AM2+, and works great! Sooooo you'll never know until you try it out! And yes all 4 cores are used, the only problem is that it's maybe working at 80% it's potentiel (but i'm still getting 60fps in games like BC2 and such) only issue is that it's shown as Unknown in my Device manager, that's it! Hope this helped you out :P

Im pretty sure that you need to have another CPU to get into windows to install the new bios. Dont quote me on that though

Try it out. I'm curious to see what it does. I wouldn't be surprised if it worked, but just didn't show the official branding for the CPU.

it will probably just say unknown cpu and only show 4 cores but it should still work fine.

You don't need to boot into windows to update the bios. Download the update ahead of time and put it on a flash drive. Then just update through the bios with the flash drive.
