So, my CPU and/or MB are no longer working. I was using a Quad Core Q9550 @2.83 MHz. I headed out to newegg to check out the prices on a replacement. I decided on going for an i7 @3.03MHz. I figured, since I was replacing it anyway why not upgrade.

How much better does an i7 perform over a Quad core Q9550? Did I make the right choice in spending the extra cash?

I dont think 300 extra over the 920 is worth it when you can reach those speeds with a good CPU cooler (of which you will want to get anyways because the stock one sucks). If you live near a Micro Center you may want to check there since when i got my i7 920 it was only 200 and even with taxes was far cheaper than newegg.

I can see that... but is there a big difference between the i7 and a similarly clocked Quad Core?

Well the old socket doesnt have a future while the 1366 will keep going which will give you more options later on in upgrading is one of the biggest things. Also the i7 uses DDR3 and in triple channel which can be faster but will also pretty much force you to go 64bit to get the most out of it (3x2gb sticks). The CPU itself is of course better overall than previous generations but it wouldnt be a huge difference for the most part.

maybe not a huge difference, but i would say enough. Return and get the 920, and if u want it clocked higher, get a cooler and overclock it. You can probably overclock it easily past the 950 anyways and save $400

I don't think you'll see a difference in performance upgrading the quad. I would put money down for a nice solid state drive instead.

because the stock one sucksKurushio
Not true. I OC'd both my i7 920s on the stock cooler to speeds above 3.6GHz and they didn't even hit 70C on full load on LinX

Then that is very odd lol. Most people with the stock cooler at stock speeds when they get to load go to like 90C.

An i7 at 3.03mhz? I see a problem here, my sega genesis is going to be quite the competitor.

I dont remember any games ever lagging on my old Sega Genesis lol. In fact it sort of was our first online computer since we had Sega TV and got new games over a cable line like every 2 weeks.

wow nice catch, i missed that one. i usuallydontreadevery word anymore.im just used to seeing the numbers and auto recognize them as CPUmodel or clock speeds

TC you will see a performance increase on an i7 over any normal quad esspecially when you overclock the i7. ive seen the power of the i7 at 4Ghz vs my P II 940at stock, trust me no quad not even C2Q is a match right now for a 4Ghz i7.

thats probably because you have a big case and everything is well cooled. When overclocking the cpu is not the one that takes most of the damage, it is the motherboard and the northbridge that take the tackle. I myself had my phenom 2 at 3.8ghz with stock cooler and when i upgraded to the v1 there wasnt much of a difference. Keeping nnorthrbridge is ideal for big overclocks, watercooled northbridge will be crucial to a big overclock too.
