A friend of mine is a manager of an apple store. He tells me that the most expensive card you can currently have is the Quadro FX 5600 Which costs £1700 would wipe the floor with any other card you could throw at it. Is it ture?

This is not true for games whatsoever. The Geforce line of cards are designed for running games, and will outperform the Quadro series cards in consumer pc gaming. Do a few google searches for this type of subject as many people have had similar questions since they started coming out with the Quadro cards. Those are outstanding workstation modeling/rendering/editing cards, hence the high prices.. but are not comparable to any decent Geforce card in terms of gaming power.

I would use this analogy for your friend-- Think of pc games as race tracks. The Quadro is a dumptruck that costs over $100,000 with a ton of horsepower and torque, but it's not built to be effective on a racetrack. It's built to work and help construct the tracks. The Geforce is a sports car costing around $30,000-- it may not have the raw power of the dumptruck, but it's built to handle the race tracks (games).

Your friend is incorrect. Quadro cards are not made for gaming, they're made for CAD and DCC workstations. Read the Quadro vs. GeForce Technical Brief if you're interested in learning the difference. Take a copy to your friend as well. ;) Edit: that tech brief is old. There is probably better info out there.

Actually your friend is only partly right. He's correct in saying that the most expensive card available for MAC's is the Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5Gb of VRAM. The most expensive video card PERIOD is the Quadro FX 5800 with 4 Gb of VRAM, which isn't available for Mac Pro's yet (TAKE THAT, APPLE). Now, will it wipe the floor with any other card? In terms of rendering massive-resolution CAD images or photo-video editing, debatable. The ATI FireGL's top of the line cards are very competitive in programs like Maya, but the Quadro FX 5600 (and, respectively, the 5800) are overall slightly better (although much more expensive). Can they game? Sure, they can game. But a friggin $200 GTX 260 is already much better for gaming due to a specialized architecture. Apples and oranges here, bro.
