Quake 1 mods and TC's on Steam

im new to steam and have not donepc gaming for about 10 yearsand just wondered if anyone knew a way to use mods and TC's for quake one? ive got a few and have managed to get one to work (Quake Rally) by importing the .exe file to steam but the others dont have .exe files in them. in the "read me" file it wants me to run them in dos by running winquake -game (mod).

any help would be most appreciated

I used Dark Places just fine with Steam. All I had to do was take the .exe for that and rename it GLQuake after moving the files into the folder and there was no problem running.
