Could I also play games on a computer running on a workstation card, such as the Quadro card line for nVidia, and the Firestream from ATI? I was considering getting one, because I can get a huge discount from work, because we use AutoCAD. Would it play games well?

WOrkstation cards do not game well at all. Your probably looking at low end GPU performance when buying a high end workstation card. Workstation cards are really good for floating point calculations.

You're considering getting a workstation card for your home computer? Would a workstation card be useful for you at home or are you hoping to get a workstation card cheaper than a gaming card?

I was talking about the obscenely expensive ones, like $1-2000. I can get it paid for by my employer. It will be going in my home computer that i Use for gaming and work, about equally as much.

If you are going to be working at home, its definitley worth it. If you are going to use it for games and whatnot, it isn't worth it, your better off going for a normal GPU

4870x2 is in a league of its own only surpassed by the GTX 295.

Both of those are dual GPU single PCB cards, so they use more power than regular video cards.

Now on the other hand though a SLI setup of GTX 285s beats out a single GTX 295 and a Tri-SLI Setup of GTX 285s beats out a Quad-SLI(2 video cards) setup of GTS 295s.

i have two 4870x2s...i notice a few glitchy quirks in some games. i hear it has something to do with games sponsoring nvidia and some kind of programming code, i'm not positive, but it's sort of a known issue.

(also, these cards get HOT! give them plenty of room.)

in the witcher, whenever i walk in water, the water reflecting around my feet would flicker unless i ran the game in a window...same with WoW, shadows would flicker unless running in windows mode

it's nothing that detracts from my gaming experience, as window mode looks the same as full screen, but it's just a minor nuisance.

not all games are like this, just some.

that has to do with the drivers and most games dont support more than 2 GPU's so that could be another problem. also yeah they get hot but there is also something called manual fan control in the catalyst controll center. also if im not mistaken 2 ATI HD 4890's out perform a 4870X2 by a good amount. ALSO Amd will be releasing its DX11 cards sep 10th this year. the 5XXX seeries.

I was kinda considering waiting, but I the voucher for a discount expires before then. that has to do with the drivers and most games dont support more than 2 GPU's so that could be another problem. also yeah they get hot but there is also something called manual fan control in the catalyst controll center. also if im not mistaken 2 ATI HD 4890's out perform a 4870X2 by a good amount.
