Yes, I'm asking another question about my GTX 480.

As some of you may know (had you read through my previous thread), two days ago I tried out my newly overclocked system for the first time. To test it out, I ran Crysis Warhead, and once I got everything running properly, the game ran amazingly. This was with my GPU clocked at 800MHz (core), and 2050MHz (memory). Now, once I played through the whole thing, I decided to see how the original Crysis would run under the same settings. Because Warhead seems more GPU-intensive than it's predecessor, I was expecting great things. Unfortunately, I got everything but. I played through the first four levels and finally had to stop at the fifth due to how glitchy the performance was getting. Not only was I only averaging between 30-40 fps, but I experienced an unbearable amount of screen tearing and sound glitches. It was pretty frustrating, to say the least. It just didn't seem to make sense that, under the same overclock, I was able to average Warhead at 45-50 fps with no signs of any type of glitching. I wasn't able to even come close to that performance in Crysis.

So... my question is, do all games handle overclocking the same way, or is it known that different games will run differently under different overclocks?

Crysis original performs worse than WH in general. Did you try patching it? Personally I played vanilla unpatched Crysis and the game would turn into a slugfest after an hour causing me to restart the game, a slideshow to simply put it despite the fps counter indicating 20-30fps :(

I never played wh, but supposely Crysis's environment is bigger (open world) so is more resource hog.

O.O that's a good FPS for Crysis if you're running it out maxed of course. my 5850 get's about 25 FPS average using an ultra high config. And it feels fine. It drops down to 20 and I can't notice it. This is coming from a guy that NEEDS his games to be 150+ FPS(Cs:s) 100 FPS(L4D2) and average 60 FPS on bfbc2.

This is weird, on my system I average 50+ FPS overclocked exactly as yours (CPU: 3.30GHz, GPU 1600/2050).

"Need"? I doubt your monitor could even display 150fps.

Crysis works better for me, whereas Warhead has horrible FPS drops. Maybe its because I'm using a ATI card.

The GPU voltage is at stock, my CPU is at 1.15, as for the res I'm playing at it's 1680*1050.

It wasn't the FPS numbers that was bothering him. He said it was glitching or stuttering, sound is bugging out, and screen tearing. TC, Crysis is a resource hog. Crysis Warhead was suppose to be better optimized than its predecessor so that's why you're seeing the difference.

According to your PC specs, it's really unfortunate that you're experiencing these issues. I feel less optimistic about my new build (not in my sig btw) now.

To Elann, thanks for pointing out what my main problem is. It seems that everyone overlooked it and only read the bit about lower fps. And, as for your build, don't feel any less optimistic about it because my system, at the point where I was experiencing this problem, was overclocked (both the GPU and CPU), so it is not a good indication of how a non-OC'ed system will run. The reason I started this thread in the first place is because I had previously heard somewhere that Crysis did not handle overclocks very well, and I just wanted a confirmation on the matter.

And, to abuabed, the reason you're getting better results (fps-wise at least) than me with the same overclock is because you're running at a lower res (1920x1080 on my end). That, however, still does not explain the glitching issue.

Have you played around with your memory settings? Because as far as I know, both Intel and AMD chipsets don't put the right settings for your memory at first, so that could be the issue. Additionally, I've also seen situations where unstable memory causes screen tearing and the like. You could look into it and see if that's causing the problem (timings, speeds and voltages, specifically).

this is funny, i had the same problem, the other day when i was overclocking my 8800GTS' . I ran the Crysis Gpu Benchmark and it would always crash, but at the same settings for WH and starcraft and 3dMark06 it was running fine.

Yeah, I've done this. When I first started up my system my RAM was only running at 1066 MHz even though it is supposed to be able to run at 1600 MHz. When my Crysis problem occurred, it was actually set to 1503 MHz. As for the voltages, I tried touching them once or twice and both times my computer crashed not even five minutes into Prime95. Timings... well that's where things get a bit too complicated for me.

Right now I'm running my system at 3.63 GHz (CPU), and 1654 MHz (RAM), with no changes to the voltages. With this configuration I am able to run Prime95 for a good two hours with no errors or warnings and with my lead CPU core temp maxing out at 80*C (average of all 4 is about 76*C).

I find it the other way around, Crysis runs like butter while Warhead runs like a dog.
