between the intel i7 920 AND the intel Core2Quad Q9550 which is better overall and which is better for gaming

Clock-for-clock, the Core i7 architecture performs better than the Core 2 Quad architecture. Overall the i7 920 has the clear upper hand in terms of performance despite its slightly lower clock speed, especially in situations where the workload can easily be distributed over multiple threads.
In games that only support one or two threads, however...the i7 920 and Q9550 are going to perform pretty much the same. You'll only see the i7 920 pull ahead significantly in multithreaded games like GTA IV or Unreal Tournament 3. With any luck, we'll soon start seeing some more of these games that take advantage of multi-core CPUs..and when we do, the i7 chips will have a significant advantage.

I agree, at this point it isn't worth it to invest money into the Core i7 for gaming.
core i7 is a bit faster but also has a heafty price tag and not worth it for gaming. imprezawrx500totaly agree not worth it when the Q9550 rips any game apart and will still be doing it for a while to come to
I feel the xact opposite. There is no point not going for an i7 at this time, sure its a bit more expencive, but why getting the s775 platform rigth now when it´s preatty much discontinued?
If one have the s775 and thinking of an uppgrade there migth be a good buy to get the Q9550 and expand the life by a bit on the slowly sinking ship, but im possitive that a while ahead the i7 will make use of it´s power, today most apps are 2threaded but in the future there will be multithreaded, by then the hyperthreading will make more difference than in todays 2threaded apps. The i7 920 have 4cores but are working like 8. (4real ones and 4 simulated ones/hyperthreading.)
And when the Q9550 is in the s775 that rig is preatty much as fast as the s775 ever will be (thus the sinking ship.), but i7 920 will be able to uppgrade for a long time ahead.
Im sure that the CPU either be it a i7 920 or a C2Q9550 will do fine for a long time, whe havn´t seen very much improvment in the amount of apps to use many cores even the quad have been out for many years, and most likley it´ll take some time to get use to code in multithreaded instead of tydays standard of one or two threads.
Gaming wise either will do for quite some time ahead, most games are much more relying on GPU than the CPU.
You might as well go for the i7 system, since it's newer, it's currently Intel's top-of-the-line architecture and they'll be slowly backing away from their older sockets.
I love it, but I upgraded from a socket 939 AMD system that was about 4 years old, so for me the upgrade was a no-brainer.
In fact, I'm thinking about building another one for my parents since 6GB of DDR3 RAM is so freaking cheap right now. I can't beleive how cheap newer RAM is right now.
hmm about $3300 AUD if not a little more
its a great upgrade for me and well worth it, since the PC im using at the moment was made in 2002
its specs are:
pentium 4 3.2 GHz
1GB RAM
nvidia geforce FX5200
120GB HDD (very pathetic)
my current system is very laughable

Wow! :o
and funny thing is, the reason why I upgraded was I had the same system as you!
I meant in the future....[QUOTE="-GeordiLaForge-"][QUOTE="dave0015"]
im not upgrading im getting a new PC

in a very long time. Way after the i5
In that case, it all comes down to how much you want to spend. If you've got the money , go for the i7. If money is an issue, socket 775 still has some life in it. But I'm sure that the socket 1366 platform will have alot more upgrade options down the road...Please Log In to post.
