Clock-for-clock, the Core i7 architecture performs better than the Core 2 Quad architecture. Overall the i7 920 has the clear upper hand in terms of performance despite its slightly lower clock speed, especially in situations where the workload can easily be distributed over multiple threads.

In games that only support one or two threads, however...the i7 920 and Q9550 are going to perform pretty much the same. You'll only see the i7 920 pull ahead significantly in multithreaded games like GTA IV or Unreal Tournament 3. With any luck, we'll soon start seeing some more of these games that take advantage of multi-core CPUs..and when we do, the i7 chips will have a significant advantage.

I agree, at this point it isn't worth it to invest money into the Core i7 for gaming.

totaly agree not worth it when the Q9550 rips any game apart and will still be doing it for a while to come to

If your going to go for i7 then you should do it soon. There are some rumors that once i5 comes out the i7 920 will be gone and then hopes for a cheap i7 will totally disappear. Or you could get i5 which will be a touch slower than i7 but im not sure if the socket will last as long as 1366.

I feel the xact opposite. There is no point not going for an i7 at this time, sure its a bit more expencive, but why getting the s775 platform rigth now when it´s preatty much discontinued?

If one have the s775 and thinking of an uppgrade there migth be a good buy to get the Q9550 and expand the life by a bit on the slowly sinking ship, but im possitive that a while ahead the i7 will make use of it´s power, today most apps are 2threaded but in the future there will be multithreaded, by then the hyperthreading will make more difference than in todays 2threaded apps. The i7 920 have 4cores but are working like 8. (4real ones and 4 simulated ones/hyperthreading.)

And when the Q9550 is in the s775 that rig is preatty much as fast as the s775 ever will be (thus the sinking ship.), but i7 920 will be able to uppgrade for a long time ahead.

Im sure that the CPU either be it a i7 920 or a C2Q9550 will do fine for a long time, whe havn´t seen very much improvment in the amount of apps to use many cores even the quad have been out for many years, and most likley it´ll take some time to get use to code in multithreaded instead of tydays standard of one or two threads.

Gaming wise either will do for quite some time ahead, most games are much more relying on GPU than the CPU.

The cost of i7 really isnt that bad besides the mobo. DDR3 ram is now WAY cheaper than what it was before and the timings have also gotten much tighter. I got 6gb of OCZ DDR3 Ram with 7 cas latency for about $90. A few years ago 4gb would of cost like 600 lol. Plus if you look around at places like micro center they have sales going on. I got the i7 920 for just $245 which is like 40 cheaper than even newegg (with the only downside that it was the C0 and not the D0 revision but doesnt really matter). Plus if you did a new build now, you wouldnt even need to buy a new OS since you can just use Win7 RC for free until next year around June.

guys price is not an issue. All i care about is power, and the i7 920 looks to be more powerful than the Q9550

Between the two, I would definitely get the i7. When do you plan on upgrading your CPU though?

then there is no contest, if money isn´t an issu and your getting a new PC, the i7 is the obvious to get. 1 i7 is faster. 2 i7/1366 will live for a few years and give you plenty of time to upgrade, totally unlike the s775. 3 DDR3 tech with tri-chanels mode.

hmm about $3300 AUD if not a little more

its a great upgrade for me and well worth it, since the PC im using at the moment was made in 2002

its specs are:

pentium 4 3.2 GHz

1GB RAM

nvidia geforce FX5200

120GB HDD (very pathetic)

my current system is very laughable

You might as well go for the i7 system, since it's newer, it's currently Intel's top-of-the-line architecture and they'll be slowly backing away from their older sockets.

I love it, but I upgraded from a socket 939 AMD system that was about 4 years old, so for me the upgrade was a no-brainer.

In fact, I'm thinking about building another one for my parents since 6GB of DDR3 RAM is so freaking cheap right now. I can't beleive how cheap newer RAM is right now.

Just wondering, are you getting tax refund with those purchase? If you live in Sydney, there a computer store close to me selling the i7 920 for around $370 ( fluidtek in carlingford). I just think what you're paying for is a bit expensive for what they're worth. Make sure you do a good research before buying the stuffs. Check out Msy too.

In that case, it all comes down to how much you want to spend. If you've got the money , go for the i7. If money is an issue, socket 775 still has some life in it. But I'm sure that the socket 1366 platform will have alot more upgrade options down the road...
