Why is it that when you upgrade from an i3 to i5, you are actually getting a lower speed in the i5?

They are both quad cores and have a cache difference of only 2mb, yet the AMD has a speed of 3.4GHZ while the Intel only has 2.66.
2 MB can make a noticeable difference especially when i think they have 8 or 6 MB in total. 2.6 GHz of one processor doesnt equal to another CPU at 2.6 GHz. You also have to look at the architecture of the CPU and CPUs are very complex so its pretty hard to get into really specific details.

the architectures are totally different and they have different manufacturing processes. If you want to compare specific CPUs, your best bet is looking up reviews.
Sites like Tomshardware or hardwarecanuks are my personal choices for that kind of thing.
i like how tomshardware compares it with a large amount of other products but sometimes they get really random performance compared to other benchmarks. anyways for CPUs and GPU reviews i go to overclockersclub or anandtech and sometimes guru3d.Please Log In to post.
