I just put together a new system about a month or two ago. I bought a socket 939 mobo, but I've read a lot of comments on how am2 is much better. So my question is, is socket 939 worth it? Is it dead technology? I just hate to think that I bought something that won't be able to be upgraded much.

Its dead. All thats left are bottom of the barrel CPUs and there not all that great gaming wise. Most do have PCIe x16 though so you can get graphics card upgrades.

I'm sorry to say, but your upgrade path is rather limited.

Socket 939 is dead in terms of any new processors coming out. All the high end motherboards seem to have been discontinued. I can't find many. The performance difference between 939 and AM2 is negligible (at the same frequencies).

If you can still return it, I would start over with an Intel socket 775 processor. At least that way there is some kind of upgrade path.

Well I guess that's what I get for being an impulse buyer, I practically bought the first thing I saw lol. Oh well, I guess there's really not much I can do now. Thanks for the replies.

Even though it's dead in terms of future hardware releases, socket 939 is still alive and kicking in terms of performance if you can get a nice board. I run 939 with 3800+ X2, overclocked, 2 gigs of ram, and an 8800GTS and I can run Crysis on all High at 20-30 fps (This is with the XP DX10 tweaks off). Runs everything else currently out. It may have been a bad purchase for this time though (They're not stocking new 939 stuff, just selling everything off). Where did you buy it from? If you ordered it from Tigerdirect.com or Newegg.com or something, you could just return it for a refund and get something else.

I bought everything from newegg. I'd return what I bought, but unfortunately for me, I think there's a 30 day return limit.

Don't fret man. You'll be fine with it for awhile if you can't do a return. Just stick with the stuff until the new intel chips come out and upgrade to that. You won't notice a huge performance difference in AM2 vs. an OC 939. Intel would be more of an increase, but you'll still be more than capable of playing current games at good settings.

I have had very little problems with my socket 939 system and I have been running this nice little mobo for two years of hard gaming. I have upgraded through 3 different video cards (6600GT, 7800GT, and currently my 8800GT 512MB) and it still plays Wow Extremely well, and CoD4 is a blast with the new video card. Still, I plan to upgrade next June as I am hoping AMD will catch backup (Get your CPU's out on time please!) and hopefully figure out how to design a nice and neat motherboard. Currently, all AMD motherboards look like they were designed by someone on crack. I'll never understand why you put the floppy drive connector as far away from the floppy drive as possible (yes, I still have a bunch of 3 1/2 floppys running around). Just upgraded to my new Stacker 832 and PC Power & Cooling 750Quad 750Watt PSU, so my system is running wonderfully for the time being. :)

I just ditched it last week, DDR is more expensive and the X2s are pretty gone. Opterons are insanely priced you can have a quad-core.
