if im mainly doing school work (word processing etc) and music and film production with a little gaming on the side (all valve products, CoD, any truely must have heavy hitters etc) would a mac book pro be ok for me? i know someones gonna say a gaming laptop is an oxymoron, but thats not the real reason im geting it. but i would love to be able to play l4d and tf2 from time to time. as well as ep3 and sc2.

thoughts?

A Mac for gaming is an oxymoron. 9 out of 10 people that will reply to this thread will say Macs are horrible for gaming (which is true), but there will always be 1 person who says "omgahhhh i lyke uber max out ERRYTHING on my Mac!!!!1"

i understand that. but will it be ok for just the occasional gaming? like im not trying to play crysis or anything, thats what my desktop at home is for. i just need one i can have at college to do college-y things as well as the occasional gaming.

Your biggest difficulty is going to be in finding games that can run on the Mac OS. Many people use BootCamp to dual boot XP or Vista. However, with the limited drive space available on Macs I wouldn't do that.

well, if youre looking for mainly wp and occasional gaming, i would think a pc, costs nearly 1000 usd less for same system specs as a mac book pro. or you could spend the same as a macbook pro and get a really good pc

Current Macbook Pros have Mobile versions of the Nvidia 9600, a good card by all means that can run all games at varying settings. My roommate has a previous version MBP witht a mobile 8600 GT and it Runs most games, save for tittles like Cryisis.

All in all they are great gaming laptops. Previous posts warned of "idiots" such as myself, however, they are the idiots. If they had ever seen a MBP game they wouldn't have made such commens. I have seen a MBP game and it handles itself just as any other similarly equipped windows-running laptop would.

It is a quality peice of equipment.

The Macbook and the Macbook Pro are completely different. Macbooks have integrated intel graphics (soon to be switching to nVidia 9400m platform) and Macbook Pros have dedicated mobile GPUs such as the 9600m.

If you have a Mac, get Mac tailored games that Apple lists. Macs run Source games fine and are more than capable, and they also run games by Blizzard just as fine (as they offer bipartisan support to Windows and Mac).

Or..... you could buy a laptop at 1/3 the cost with nearly the exact same specs or better, but if you just got to have a shiney chassis with a glowing apple on the back then the MBP is able to handle itself fairly well with games.

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro with the 8600M GT in and it runs almost anything I throw at it on maxed out settings besides Crysis of course. I have used many different methods of playing Windows games on the machine from using bootcamp with Vista and Windows 7 to running VM Fusion, Wine and Crossover for Mac. You could probably get away with running emulation programs like Fusion or Crossover for Valve titles. Call of Duty has all the PC equivalents for Mac or just make a small gaming partition on in Bootcamp to run Windows. All in all the machine won't disappoint you for whatever you use it for.

Have you check with your school to see if you can get a discount on Apple products? I know at the University of Michigan where I work and finished my degree has a discount on Apple products and that was how I was able to get the MBP. It came out to about 1,600 bucks fully loaded for the 15in one.

Two words: Boot Camp. With that a Macbook Pro is perfect for what you want. I got mine last month and it even plays Empire: Total War on all medium settings with zero lag.

Bad example to use, especially if it's an intel mac since Halo:Combat evolved was never optimized for the intel chips... But yeah, I ended up getting a MacBook Pro for college and I have to say it's not exactly the best idea ever. As a gamer it just doesn't meet my needs, even running XP I just don't get the performance I had hoped to get. Actually, I'm gonna be selling it pretty soon to build my own gaming desktop :)

My $800 Dell Inspiron 1520 had better specs than the Macbook Pros released back in 2007 (although I'm sure they have gotten more powerful since)

that is exactly what i needed. thanks! anyone else have any recomendations for a 15in laptop? im sorta leaning towards the alien ware. i can get it for about 2100. 9800m, 4 gigs of ram, 500gig hard drive, 2.5 core duo.

While specs are an important part of any computer, it's also good to consider other little things like battery life, size and weight, and obscure-but-possibly-useful features. For example, all FireWire-equipped Macs, including every single MacBook Pro, has a little something called FireWire Target Disk Mode. Hold down T while the computer boots up, and it's now an external FireWire drive enclosure! It's useful for servicing the OS if something goes wrong, though you'll have to connect it to another Mac to actually see anything. Also, Apple laptops tend to put more emphasis on battery life, thus you won't have to worry quite as much about being tethered to AC power. Of course, you may still consider having a faster CPU and especially a better GPU to still be more important than any of those things, and opt for something else instead. That is your call to make.

I take mine to and from university, rent out house with friends all year. A desktop+cheap laptop will still cost less then a Macbook Pro. You have your high powered system and you have a portable that will keep a good battery life considering it's low usage parts.

you can always buy the mbp if you want and get a huge hdd and dual boot with windows so you have the best of both worlds. the only thing about pc is that they wont run mac os, but macs with run windows

I'm running a MBP with an 8600m using Boot Camp to run Vista 32. Games that I play on it well include: X3 Sam and Max C&C Red Alert 2 Still Life 2 Bioshock NWN2 Penumbra Medieval Total War Fallout 3 Now, admittedly I run these games at relatively low resolutions (1280x720 or even 1024x768) with medium detail settings, on a 17" screen these resolutions look pretty good. All in all I'd say the MBP is an average laptop for gaming, but where it really shines are all the little touches like its 6.8 lb weight, magnetic power connector (my gf has tripped over my cord countless times) and the -great- laptop speakers. The speakers are literally the best I've ever heard on a laptop and I love the fact that combined with my Media Center my MBP also acts as a portable, wireless HDTV. That being said, I'm currently looking into an Alienware to replace it. While I -love- the MBP as a laptop, I really want a great gaming laptop. With the cross development of every single game for both PC and console it's put a cap on the specs most PC games require which makes a gaming laptop a more appealing prospect. -Byshop

From what I've heard (and by that I mean, listening to music on a friends Macbook Pro) the speakers are trash too. That's another thing to consider. Most laptops have horrible speakers that's why most who buy laptops spend a little extra on good headphones.

The 13" Aluminium Macbook is actually pretty good value and the 9400m chip is more than good enough to run most games. Here is the windows 7 rating which a 13" macbook gets. They also have good battery life, are light, and feel great to use.

I know it's a flawed rating system and everything but it still gives a pretty decent measure of a PCs overall performance.

I've worked with Compaq Presario, Thinkpads, Toshiba Satellite/Tecras and a number of other different laptop series and my 17" MBP sounds a lot better than any other laptop I've worked with. Of course it's nothing near a surround system, and for games a headset is ideal but like I said my MBP makes a great wireless HDTV.

why not just get a pc laptop for a third of the price, format, and then hackintosh it? Same software, better hardware, and cheaper.
