Hey all, so, please be gentle as I'm a little lacking in the knowledge about computer hardware, though I know some basic things. A few months ago my old computer (which was roughly eight years old) died on me and since then I have bought a new computer and I love it. However, I was able to harvest some old components from my old computer, specifically a 1 gb stick and 2 256 mb sticks of ram. Now, I figure the 256 mb's are pretty worthless, seeing as how my new rig has 4gb's of ram already in it. My question however, is can I put in that 1gb stick of ram into my new machine and would there be any improvement/reasoning to do it? Has Ram changed at all in such a way that wouldn't allow me to do it?

Thanks in advanced for your answers!

What you have now is DDR3 and that 1GB stick is most likely DDR2, maybe even DDR(1), so it's not compatible. Besides, 1 extra GB wouldn't make a difference anyway.

It won't be compatible like gamerns said. So I wouldn't bother trying because you probably now have 2x2GB DDR3 ram (running in dual channel) so adding that 1GB DDR1/2 stick wouldn't certainly not give you a boost and 4GB RAM is plenty for nowadays. Maybe in a year or 2 you could consider going to a larger RAM amount but now it's enough. edit: if it were compatible it could even slow down your pc because it could have a slower speed (slower than your current ram)

Never mind that adding a single 1GB won't help, memory from an 8-year old comptuer can't be added to one you've bought today. DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 are different generations of memory. They run at different voltages and are different size and shape so they don't fit in each others' slots. So if your computer was built for DDR2 that the only kind you can use, and the same goes for the other two.

I agree with Chili, plus you don't need to go beyond 4 GB memory unless you're running the 64-bit version of Windows.
