I've got like 5 minutes, so I'll try to be quick:

Step 1: Practice just taking off and landing...don't even try to move around. Do your best to go straight up and (slowly) straight back down. This will require you to tap the "W" key in shorter bursts. So, it'd look like this in a word processor "wwwwww wwwwww" (space added to keep freakin' Gamespot from censoring it) then "wwwwwww" and "www" and finally "w" touchdown. The trick is to figure out how long you need to press "w" to keep your self from dropping like a rock...but only enough to keep you from dropping like a rock.

Step 2: After you get the hang of taking off and landing, you can start moving around. The best way I can describe this would be to remind you that every movement you make, you will need to correct if you want to slow/down/turn/stop/whatever. I managed this by imagining little vector arrows sprouting out of my helicopter. The more forward you are going, the more reverse thrust (pulling back) you are going to have to apply to slow down or stop. Similarly, while turning you need to bank while hitting the tail rotor "A" or "D" keys (in the opposite direction of the bank, mind you) in order to keep a straight line. Oh yeah, and the tail rotor does not reset back to the center line...you also have to manually do that.

Step 3: Have tons of patience and the willingness to accept that you will crash and burn for most of the time in the first hour of your practice. The second hour you should be able to crash with much less frequency, but it will still happen. After the second hour, you should be mostly good for bot matches. At least, that was the series of progression I followed.

Just remember, keep practicing with this mantra in your head: "Every action I make, I need to unmake."
