A phalanx is really good against other infantry. However if your phalanx gets surrounded or the formation breaks up then they will all get killed.

As long as they keep formation a phalanx is pretty much great against anything.

Also, phalanx aren't that great against the inflexible roman troops.

Phalanx pwns from the front... that's what its designed for. Phalanxes make it physically impossible for swordsmen to close in (or at least it's painfully difficult to). Phalanxes are especially good against light infantry. I had only two units of greek phalanx militia guarding a town in Asia Minor and they managed to beat back an Egyptian half-stack (that's 10 units) assault of like 2 chariot units, the general, and a bunch of light infantry. You just need to choke them and not get flanked.

Phalanxes and Spearmen both can be very good against swordsmen. However, it depends on the skill, and equipment of the respective units on both sides of the battle. The main advantage phalanx troops have is that they are virtually impregnable from the front whereas spearmen and swordsmen are not. However, this also poses a strong disadvantage, they are easily outmanuevered and you can exploit this weakness much how Paulus exploited the Antigonid line at the battle of Pydna.

I would strongly suggest you put down the piss-poor (in comparison) retail version of the game and download Rome Total Realism mod, it greatly expands on the campaign and makes the battles all the much more interesting.

If you are going to use spear men against in infantry i recommend spartans.

it seems they can break and reform the phalanx faster than all others.
