I was just curious about something, what is the highest video card you can upgrade to without having to up the power? Im looking to make minor upgrades to my computer to just make it last a bit longer for a couple of games. By this i mean the stock (350?) you usually have when you just buy a comp from somewhere. right now im running a geforce 6150, how high could i go without having to up my power? and if i do have to, how much does that run nowadays?

um.. well it kinda depends on what bus youre running. does your computer have AGP, PCI, or PCIe slots?

The 9500gt may be the best you can grab without upgrading that PSU.

Its miles ahead of the 6150IGP in performance.

i like the deal they have going for it right there, really cheap and alone in the dark for free, cant complain even if its a sucky game. i wonder if there is a way i can find out if it would work on my power supply or not though. I dont mind upgrading it, but i would rather not if i didnt have to, you know?

well, to be honest, for the futures sake, you might as well upgrade it... you can get a 500W for like 10 bucks if you know where to look...

decently low by the looks of it. of course, if i can upgrade the power supply on the cheap id just as well do it just in case it would need slightly more juice or something. and in case you guys need to know, im also running 3 gig ram and an amd athlon 64 x2 dual processor 6000+, in case the processor adds into the power debate.

well

my strategy is buying used computers on craigslist/take computers that are being given away or are in peoples trash, and using them for parts

i have a plethora of computer parts laying around my house because of this whole ordeal, and i usually make great finds on a weekly basis

for example a few weeks ago i found an old dell dimension laying in the trash, that i picked up.. and the only thing wrong with it was its hard drive. inside it i find a geforce 5 series, 450W power supply, a crappy p4 2ghz.. and like 512MB of SDRAM

and this isnt the only PC ive gotten with some decent parts in it..

but the point of the story here is that i got all of that crap for free...

lol, its sort of a plug and play process, aside from uninstalling all the graphics drivers you have already

and dont forget to attach it to the PSU!

no, you just do it manually through ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMs, right before you install it physically..

its basically like this Uninstall Drivers > Shut Down computer > Open up computer and install card > Turn on computer > Insert CD and install drivers > Restart Computer >BINGOBANGO youve got a new video card

cool thanks, oh, and you mentioned connecting it to the psu. well, ive been looking at things, and apparently if plugged into the pcie slot, it draws its power from the board, no external connections required. at least thats what everything ive read has said so far.

some cards dont use enough energy to need an external power source, and draw enough power from the board

but some dont, particularly the higher end.. but idk much about that card's interfaces

yea, the 9500 doesnt require any external hook ups, but if i had went with the 9600, i would have had to upgrade. I plan on doing a major rehaul of everything come around xmas time, this will do until then.

idk how old your are or if you have a job, but income tax refund time is always a great time to upgrade PC components..
