I have an older computer and I kind of just want to speed up a few older games I have. My pchas Windows XPand DX 9, aP4 2.6 ghz, 768mbram,and an agp 8xgforce 4 4200 ti 128mb ramgfx card(very old I know)

I attempted to get a new card in the summer, it was an XFX 7600gt, but it had issues with textures once I installed it. So I saw this card in bestbuy's ad for $70 and this looks like it might work in my system, and it only needs a 270watt PSU (I've got 350watt)but I just don't know since it says it supports DX 10 and my computer is quite old with DX 9....so should I just forget about gaming on my current system or would this improvesome of my current games? And is the HD2400probetter than a 7600 gt? thanks.

lol i remember the 4200 was such a good price/performance card but anyways yeah the 2400 will be able to play older games well an dont worry about DX10 its literally just an option on newer games like putttin HDR on or off iyou dont have to use it. the 2400 isn't better than the 7600GT as its a budget card.

Why does everyone get stuff from best buy :| they overprice the hell outta there hardware. HD 2600XT AGP FTW. You should get this card its really good. If you want to go a little cheaper look up HD 2600PRO AGP on newegg.

They were selling 8800gt 512 memory for $250. When all newegg was sold out. On lower end cards they do overprice though.

Hey man

Well your runnin XP so DX10 is no use as it only works under Vista. Trust me, do yourself a favour, don't buy 2400PRO or a 7600GT as these are budget cards and yes they're fine with older games but, I think you should look on eBay or shop around for one of the last generation of DX9 cards, like the old GeForce 7900 or the ATI Radeon X1900 series. These are now probably selling very cheap as the newer cards are comin out and old stock needs clearing If you can find one that fits your budget (and remember to hunt for an AGP version, most are PCI-Express) you should be able to get a pretty smooth gaming experience with even some newer titles. it kinda depends on your definition of what's an old game, this could include 18 month old games like Oblivion or even the 4 year old Doom 3 , which even new budget cards can struggle with, especialy Oblivion, which even the new midrange Geforce 8600 has problems with. Hope this was helpful.

My 350 watt power supply isn't good enough for anything bigger than a 2400 or a 7600gt so I guess it'd be smarter to save my money and build an entirely new gaming pc. Trust me, if I decide to build my own pc, I'll have plenty more questions to ask you guys!!

If I build my own system, what's the price rangeI'd seewitha midrangecore 2 duo processor, 2gigs of ram, 8800gt,250gb harddrive, and I guess windows vista? do those specs sound good for even the newest games? just curious.

Yep, perfect balance between price and performance that setup should see you through at least the next year or so,even new games like Crysis should be fine as long as your reasonable with your graphics settings... Well done man, your doin better than I am, I'm thinkin of going Core 2 Quad and 2 8800Ultra's, for nearly three times the cash, I'd get only about 20-30% more power. Price-wise, where do you live( just so's I know what currency your in) as I live in the UK and we use Pounds Sterling (£). ISubmitn my money you'd be lokokin about £370- maybe £450. Remember to get a new Power supply as well and you could maybe sqeeze the Core 2 quad Q6600 as these aren't much more than the Duo's and will ensure your system is future- proof for a much longer time. Just one thing, be wary that you may not like Vista that much. I have Vista Ultimate and, aside from DirectX10 there is hardly anything new that you couldn't already do in XP. OK Vista has Windows Media Center, better search tools, tighter security and so on , but for the price MS are askin for it, it's a complete knock off also, some features are worse than XP's like networking and the giant performance hit that runnin a game in DirectX 10 has and the difference in quality is very hard to spot., ask about an OEM version of home Premium when you buy your motherboard etc, you should be able to buy one at a substancially lower price than the retail version, and it's the same disc. Hope this helps

Hey thanks, that's some good information. I do live in the U.S. so do you know what that would be in us dollars?

Also, I was wondering about the whole dual vs. quad core deal, is there really chance that games in a year will be using all 4 cores in a quad core?? I'd hate to spend the money and then be bottlenecked by a dual core cpu. The reason I don't want Windows Xp is b/c Iwill eventually need Vista's DX 10 for new games and I wouldn't want to have to buy an OS again, plus I've been using XP for a good 6 years now so I'd like a change I think. But are there a lot of compatibility issues with older games on Vista? Thanks!!

OK. Well to answer your first question £1 is about $2( the exchange rate varies daily so obviously check this first) so if I'm lookin at 350-£450 then you'll be 700-$900. Please don't take these figures as acurate representations it was just my rough gestimate, but it's pretty close I think. Now about the whole dual/quad core nonsence, well really at the minuite there are very very few programs that use all four cores to there full potential ,heck most programs out today aren't even makin the best use of 2 yet.. Some new games are beginning to come out that are multi-threaded(i.e. use extra cores) but even here dual-core is the main focus, you'll see little benefit in overall performance with a quad core chip unless you run something like photoshop or do a lot of video editing , these tasks do make use of how many core's you have, although some new games will also use whatever you've got and still want more. Anyway if I were you I'd go quad-core as it's the future by far, you wouldn't be hampered by a dual-core rig but it's always better to have future-piece of mind.. And also ,if your brave enough to try Overclocking then you can eek more speed out of each core, although it's risky and you need to make sure your cooling system'll handle the extra heat produced. Finally about Vista well, I've sadly moved back to XP. Vista is definitly better for large music and media libraries cause of Media center and so on ,but remember what I told you earlier. DirectX 10 is still in it's very early days, there aren't that many games yet apart from Crysis, Helgate London,Bioshock, COH and Lost Planet and performance when runnin games like Company of Heroes etc in DX10 mode is almost half of that in DX9 and there is little benefit in Visual quality, or at least it isn't a "WOW" step up in prettiness it is however getting better as ATI and Nvidia continue to fine tune thier graphics drivers. And don't forget, rumours are goin about that Windows 7 could be out by 2009 so that's somethin to think about to, if MS suddenly release a more polished version of DirectX ,then your snookered havin just caughed up $400 for Vista If you've got more questions just give us a shout.

Cheers
