Well, i'm thinking about buying headphones (mostly to not disturb other people and i had to switch my computer's position and now my speakers are in a horrible place). I want to know what you think about headphones over speakers for gaming (singleplayer and multiplayer) and i have some questions about surround headphones.

How is that made? Do they really have all those different channels (like home theathers)? Do i need a sound card for a surround headphone or a standard on-board sound card can do it? Are they worth the extra price in comparison to stereo? What's a good brand?

Asus Xonar DG soundcard

Sennheiser HD555 or Audio Technica AD700 headphones

Random desk mic or clip-on mic.

Total cost about $120 or $130.

Worth it? Without a doubt.

Not better. Crap to average quality audio at a premium price.

Absolutely PERFECT!:D

Dont buy a surround headphone, my sincere advice. You will get surround through dolby headphone on stereo headphones and the sound quality of stereo headphone is much better than surround.

You will be amazed by the combination recommended by tequilasunriser. I also initially got headphones because of the problem of not disturbing others and now I prefer headphones even when there is no one around. the detail you get with quality headphones is just amazing.:)

it's marketed towards those who want mics and macros all over the place

in other words, mmo gamers. i think audio quality is not even on their priority list

I should have answered this before. A sound card is definitely worth it, especially at the $30 that Asus asks for their Xonar DG. That price is a steal for the level of quality. Any nice headphones you get will have their potential locked down unless you get a dedicated sound card. (I.e. A sound card is a must if you plan to get nice headphones.) Avoid Razer, Logitech, Creative, and other "gaming/gamer" headsets. They charge you audiophile prices for average sound.

"But OP what kind of music do you listen to? If you listen to classical, acoustic, vocals, then maybe the HD 555 is better. But if you listen to rap, hip hop, rock, r&b, or anything that needs more bass (gaming), then the [Sony MDR] 7506 would be a good choice."

This...

Don't just jump for the HD555 because everyone here recommends them. They are good, but they are certinly not perfect. Remember, most people on the forums will have only used the one pair of headphones, so they can only really recommend the one pair...

Go into a store and listen to a couple of pairs. Also make sure they are comfortable...

Thanks, but should i buy a stereo headphone or surround?

Also, my main priority is audio quality. And another thing, i would like one without a microphone (or simply just one that the mic won't get in the way)

Go with either of the 2 I linked above. You can't go wrong, and thy're literally the best deals on the net as far as price/quality is concerned. Like Urworstnhtmare said, there is no such thing s true surround headphones. "Surround" headphones are just stereo headphones that emulate surround sound.

Or he can get the K240's for the best of both worlds. Bass aside, there is also one factor you seemed to leave out, sound stage/depth. That's part of the reason open back headphones such as the HD555 and AD700 have become so popular for gaming.

I'm having trouble finding the listed headphones at a reasonable price (all of them were for at least U$200). I'm gonna search a little on my own, but what specifications should i look at to measure it's quality? (or is hearing it the only way to know?)

Things i forgot: does it make any difference if it's wired or wireless?

And how much would you say that sound quality is improved by buying a sound card?

There is, i can't remember the pair right now but there are cuple headphones with at least three pair of speakers. (Front, side and rear chanels, the center is obviously mono thru the two front speakers.) Setereoimage can be altered to spoof multichanels, we still only have two ears so all sound we can hear can be produced by two speakers, but the real separation can never be as good if we don't use different speakers on each channel since no speaker is optimal and will get drowned by the small (micro) difference in the klang of the sound to produce imaged/spoofed surround. If you take two speakers and have a micro diffrence (as in the longer way to one of them) the two sounds will hit your eardrums at diffrent times and give you a feeling that one of the sounds is longer away, if this differance is being played by the same membran/coil it will begin to work against itself as the frequency it plays will hit in phase to eachother. This is why it's not optimal to play multichannel surround thru the very same speaker membane, it will drown itself and be distorted/phased incorrect. If surround is really what TC want he should take a expencive pair with multiple speakers. (The audiophilea has spoken!)

These ones, $99 on Amazon. Semi-open back, detachable cable, overall pretty good value.
