There is no way in a million years that there will be a discount for Vista users specifically. There will likely be upgrade editions that are cheaper than the full version...but there will be no special discount for Vista owners. And unfortunately, if you didn't like Vista I'm pretty sure you're not going to like 7 anyway. They are very similar.

XP was pretty much the only OS where Microsoft didn't replace it in ~2.5 years. If they release Windows 7 in six months it will have been more than 2.5 years, IIRC.

Vista has been around for 2 years right now... and 7 is probably not going to be out until the end of 09 most likely. So it has been a while in terms of OS longevity. Windows usually does release update versions which is helpful on the wallet

if the upgrade version is more than 100 pounds i say screw Microsoft got dual boot here of vista n win 7, i see no performance improvement with my sig rig, in fact it boots the same speed too so, got rocketdock cool UI for my desktop, features on vista are great, games like crysis/warhead for me runs same on both oses, its all a ploy to get xp users onto the shiny new version of vista.

mind you i would pay 60 pounds for the upgrade.

I dont have a problem with Vista I personally have never had a system crash on Vista cant recall it ever freezing. Now when i used to use XP i would have system crashes and freezing problems at least 1 a month. I will most likely get Windows 7 but it just looks like vista to me.

Sheesh a bit of misinformation in this thread.

January 26th, 2008. Contrary to all that is being said on the net, it clearly looks like Microsoft is NOT planning to release Windows 7 in 2009. Microsoft's official response, by an Email dated 26th January, 2008, to WinVistaClub states that Windows 7 is still in the planning stage and will take approximately 3 years to develop. The following is the extract of the mail:

Q. What is the expected timeline for the availability of Windows 7?

A. We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and expect it will take approximately 3 years to develop. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release.

Q. Has Windows 7 been released to manufacturing?

A. We're continuing to work with our partners on the development of Windows 7, and are not sharing any additional information at this time.

Q. Is the schedule for Windows 7 being moved up due to poor Windows Vista sales?

A. We're not sharing additional information on Windows 7 at this time. However, we're confident that many organizations are recognizing the value in Windows Vista. Of note, sales of Windows Vista licenses have now passed 100 million. In addition, Windows Vista is being adopted by businesses at a rate that is similar to past releases. In the business market there are early, mainstream and late adopters, with the majority of businesses falling into the category of mainstream. We're seeing positive indicators that we're already starting to move from the early adoption phase into the mainstream, and that more and more businesses are beginning their planning and deployment of Windows Vista

http://www.winvistaclub.com/i7.html

so no win7 this year.

if past history is any indication (which is usually is in this case) MS will not offer discounts, you will only get an upgrade option as many of said.

the ploy is the one you are playing upon yourself, because you are either grossly uninformed, an uneducated user, or simply a liar that isnt dual booting win7 at all. 7 out preforms Vista in every catagory and i have the data to prove it. if you do indeed have win7 and it isnt blowing away vista something is wrong or like a said earlier, your post is just BS, and you are lying.

Interesting. Why the enormous publicity over the massively available beta then? Isn't that going to dampen anticipation over the final version? Especially when there's so little new. I really hope they add more new features, because people are going to be expecting a lot from a 2011 release.

Easy there, cowboy. A lot of the people on this site are primarily gamers. We don't always notice improved resource management so much. Improvement in boot and shutdown times are only noticeable with a stopwatch for me. The biggest improvement for me was the flashy taskbar, but like you say I'm an uneducated user.

with so many years until release, no. anticipation wont matter either. its not like most will have a real choice of upgrading unless you still want to hold on to the dinosaur XP is going to be. at any rate OEMs will quickly pick up win7 for install in new PCs, buisness will adopt because of discounts, early adopters will pick it up, so will beta testers, etc. also jsut because win7 Looks like Vista doesnt mean anything. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/whats-new.aspx i normally hate to refer to MS's website, but i just couldnt find a nice list for you.

the current version of win7 very far from final. you cannot expect performance in applications like games, to be leaps ahead of where you are now when there is so much more to it than just the OS.

i was merely stating that the hype and actual real world results may get xp users to buy win 7, and my vista boots just as fast as win 7 ive timed it, it kinda feels like a bunch of new features have been added to vista and this new taskbar, just hoping more will be done, and also ive been reading everything on win 7 for the past 2 weeks....so dont tell me i dont know what im saying, yes ive read everything they have changed and not changed, and yes i hope when its final release comes there will be some radical differences, the current 7000 build isnt as impressive as i once thought, when i first dual booted it, which i am doing lol calling me a liar when ive been using it for 3 weeks off and on er..., i found it to be really awesome, but at that time i was running 32-bit win 7, and had 32-bit vista runnning, soon as i installed vista 64 and dual booted with 7 64-bit, with the new 4gb ram i got, i really dont see much improvement, pretty sure im entitled to my own opinion here.

I pose 2 questions

1. When will we actually need windows 7?

2. Why will i want it?

using win 7 64-bit as we speak:

I think a very good point to put across here is that windows 7 will be very kind to people with lower end systems, it will breathe new life into their older PC's, it does appear to use less resources while still looking as sleek as vista does, but with 4gb ram running vista 64-bit, I currently do not feel the need to move to windows 7 if in the future when windows 7 does appear on the market and I see some really innovative features that wow me beyond belief, or improvements in performance that far surpass my current setup then yes after sp1 i will buy windows 7, and yes as another poster said we are mostly gamers, i do use my pc for media, msn, browsing the net and burning dvds with nero, but thats about it.

http://www.overclock.net/windows/420563-unofficial-windows-7-discussion-thread.html first n second post, my findings.

anyone else want to share impressions?

nice find james, its cool to help people get used to win7s look and feel without having to go through dual boot with the beta.
