hey guys im about to order some parts to upgrade my comp and amongst those parts will be a new mobo so i know i will be required to format my drives. my question though is do i need to format every drive?

i have two separate hard drives. one drive is drive E: which is one entire drive and the other is partitioned into drive C: for windows and drive D: for games. i was wondering if i could copy over the contents of drive D: and some files such as music to the drive with drive E: so that i dont lose any data. when i copy it over i wouldnt have the E: drive with now moved contents plugged to the mobo. then after formatting drive C: i would reinstall windows on it and then after all is well and runs i would hook up the second hard drive with all my moved data and then place it back on C:.

would that work so i dont lose all my data? sorry for the longgggg explanation but that is really the only way i can explain it lol

in case anyone was wondering these are the parts i will be upgrading to:

-EVGA 8800GT SSC edition 512mb

-OCZ 700W PSU

-Corsair dominator 2gb of 1066mhz RAM (2x1gb)

-Asus P5E X38 Intel mobo

-Intel Q6600 Quad core 2.4ghz CPU (going to OC to 3.0-3.2Ghz)

-Zalman 9500 CPU fan

thanks to all that respond :)

to reinstall windows. i was told on a previous post that i would need to reformat so that i can get rid of any drivers and unecessary files so that i can reinstall windows again nice and fresh i mean when you think about it it would beat the hassle of finding and deleting old drivers and what not and it would eliminate any unecessary files that could have clouded my performance after years of use

About your games, you should just back up the saves. Most games have registry entries that can only be replaced by reinstalling. In fact, now would be a good idea to back them up to cd/dvd so you have a more permanent back up.

eh i duno its quicker and hassle free to just copy over all the contents you know. that way i can get everything i want instead of accidently forgetting something.

but back to my directions i listed above i need to know if that would work fine?

So long as everything you want is put onto a drive that you will not format... I just figured it would take less space just to back up the saves instead of the 100s of gb's the games will take up.

well the thing is there isnt much space of games since i already took the initiative to uninstall and delete old games so there isnt much space id be transfering over. all that would pretty much go over from D: and C: drives is games i actually want, my music, school work, and small little programs i want to keep that might be installed which i know for a fact will fit on the E: drive so im not too concerned with space lol

you can copy documents, pics, music, saved games, basically anything except system files or windows files over to another hdd and reformat it and put it back in there. i have all that backed up anyways bc ive had so many computer problems and lost data, i have all my stuff backed up so i can just drag it over after a reinsall of windows

You only need to reformat the partition where windows is installed (typically c:). You can keep all the data on your d: and e: partitions.

hm well im just thinking about putting over everything to the E: drive and reformat that drive because im not happy with the partition size lol. i felt like we added too much space to the C: drive which limited the D: drive size. this has given me free space issues when installing games so i figure ill reformat the entire drive and rewrite the partitions.

Its best to burn what you want to save to dvd or copy it to an external hard drive or another internal HD. Everytime you do major upgrades and at least once a year on any existing system i always think you should reformat and reinstall windows as it gets bloated and runs like crap after awile.
