Checking current prices now on newegg. I was wondering if it would be possible to crossfire a 3870x2 with a near future 4870x2 on a single board. a few months ago i came across a post on GS about being able to crossfire a 2900xt with a 3870; I was wondering since ATI has expanded the CF compatibility ( Crossfire X, and Hybrid CF) from selective cards, to generational cards if such a setup would be possible.

Or maybe if i should wait and do a quad 4850 CF setup.

U can only X-fire the same generation card 4850-4850,4870x2-4870x2 and so on. U cant do a 3870x2 with a 4870x2.

the 3870x2 with a 4870x2 is what i'm trying to find out. but you Can mix cards within a generation, and in special cases outside a gen. ex. 3850 with a 3870 works, a 4850 with a 4870. ATI CF mainpage , certified crossfire combination chart.

the ati/amd website doesn't really satisfies an entusiasts needs, it's directed towards average consumers that arent well informed. as u can see in the combination chart at the very bottom it says "ATI Radeon HD 2900 GT Crossfire Support Scheduled for Q3 2008". Basically saying that CF with that card is possible, but not supported despite the fact that the hd 2k series was released over a fiscal year ago in card generations. What i'm trying to say is that Although it may be possible to use a 3870x2 with a 4870x2, will it be supported with crossfire software drivers? or turn out to be a fluke like the 2900xt and 3870 setup. which somehow magically worked.

no biggy, it's a tough question though. I'm wondering if i called some sort of Ati/Amd tech support would they be able to answer my question. or give me some customer support training bs, "we don't know". or and uneducated "no". thats if they're not outsourced to another continent. i'm about to drop a good $800usd on the answer.

An ATI tech would be able to give you an answer about whether or not crossfire will be supported between 3870x2 and 4870x2...But I can tell you right now that you won't be able to crossfire a 3870x2 with a 4870x2. 4000 series cards do not crossfire with 3000 series cards.

4870 or 4850 should be able to crossfire with a 4870x2, though.
