Do you need an existing windows OS to install an upgrade version?

It really depends on how lucky you are. People I know have had Windows 7 upgrade over clean hard drives. Myself (on the 1 upgrade I did) it didn't work. I had to go through the process below. The worst thing that happens if you don't have Windows installed when you "upgrade" is your upgrade will fail with an invalid serial key. Fix? Just upgrade Windows over the top of the install you just did. You can still format the OS install on the next upgrade. Even easier fix? Just buy the OEM version.

If you can't do a clean install with your upgrade disk call microsoft and they will give you a registry edit so it will work.
