quick question about Laptops

ok, so if I were to connect a  monitor to a laptop through the DVI port (or whatever is built into the laptop) would it be running as two displays? or would the laptop screen stop displaying a picture?

whatever is on the laptop screen will be displayed on the tv.  its just an output to the video

Depending on the graphics card in the laptop, you may also be able to run a dual display. Nvidia provides a utility that will allow you to split your screen over the laptop display and a monitor.
