What are your processor speed, video card, hard drive space? Also this belongs in hardware forums.

Having more RAM will be more noticeable if your other components are up to speed. It will help loading times and you can run more programs at the same time. That is why I asked about your other components. Sometimes it's better to buy a new computer if you have an updated one. Depending on what you wanna play.

it'll improve a lot - and i'm recommending on getting 1Gb and throw away the 512Mb - coz later you'll need to throw away 2 sticks of 512Mb RAM - just buy the 1Gb and later you can add another 1Gb

Just remeber though when it comes to ram size isnt everything,

ram has different hrz rates which determines how quickly they can move data, most often ram with higher hrz will improve your system more then just larger generic ram.

If I were you I'd look up your motherboards website and see what the max hrz ram it can handle, then make sure you get it, if possible id recommend corsair or transcend as the best ram but also most expensive, kingston also is a good choice for balancing preformance with price, but i certainlly wouldnt recommend just going generic.

if you have a 512 mb ram, you'd better not to get a 1 gb and pair them with each other on your pc because the performance will decrease greatly. i suggest you sell your 512 mb ram and buy a 1 gb one (or even 2 gb if your budget allows since it makes further upgrades easier). you see, when you pair 2 or more rams on your mainboard, they should have the same attributes to give you the ultimate performance.

yeah to pair a 512Mb and 1Gb of RAM not a good idea - it's bad for perfomances + games may not be stable ( i had that problem)

2 gigs is the right amount of RAM to have these days. RAM prices have recently dropped by a lot. You can now get 2 gigs for less than $100.00
