What kind of performance could I expect?

I play mostly source-caliber games but I'm worried about Empire total War since my 8800gtx struggles to run it at 1650x1080 on my other PC

I'd go for the 4870 but I found a 4850 for only $105 which is $70 less than the cheapest 4870 and I'm not that huge on graphics

The 4850 would perform about the same as your 8800GTX. E:TW is limited more by your CPU than your graphics card, so an upgrade, such as it is, would not do much to help it run better.

Thanks, but the 4850 isn't an upgrade from my 8800gtx, it is for a seperate computer since my family has taken over my old one and I just need one for college

I would say go for the GTS 250. Overall better card and about the same price as the 4850.
