I'm thinking about returning my Alienware with the radeon 5870 for a new Asus laptop that comes with a radeon 5870 mobility how much performance willl I lose?

Compared to desktop graphics cards, the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 should perform somewhere between a Radeon HD 5750 and 5770 according to the specs (shader count of 5770, clock rate of 5750).

Expect potential overheating problems during long sessions of gaming too. Unless you really really need both mobility and gaming in one package, you should always choose a desktop for core gaming.

Playing a FPS or any other game that prefers a mouse over anything with a laptop is a stupid thing to do. Kind of like playing racing games with keyboards. And First-person-anything with controllers. (Yeah, sorry console players, just had to take a stab at you...It's just plain dumb and unorthodox)
