I have the same problem! I've troubleshooted it SO much too, I have no idea, if you find the answer please message me. I think it has something to do with AMD GFX cards if that helps in your search.

Has nothing to do with AMD, I'm running a 5850 and just started the game
Rage > Properties > Uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game"
Rage stopped working for me about 3/4 of the way through but the surprising solution was to simply skip the intro scenes. (right click then properties, startup options etc.)
I deleted rage and then I reinstall on a different hard drive and rage plays for about 3 seconds?

It just has a really, really bad ending. It's called taste mate. Glad u had fun, but to me it was a really bad shooter. The gun mechanics were stiff and the missions were boring.
