This is probably a silly question but I'm new to raid. If a hard drive fails in raid 5 will windows give you a message or how do you tell if one failed?

Thanks.

If its software based (done through Windows), it will tell you.

If its hardware based, it *might* tell you depending on the drivers of the motherboard/controller.

You'll most likely find out when booting up your machine as motherboard/controller will tell you (before Windows loads) that a hard drive is failing or has failed and to press a key to proceed (ignore, replace drive, or recreate array)

If done through BIOS, intel matrix storage driver will tell you on Windows. If you are using server 2k3/2k8 raid, no idea, I've used it for a bit, but never had a hd fail while using it. For mdadm software raid, it will send system logs, but won't yell at you upfront, It will automatically drop hds from the array and re-assemble if you have spares though.
