Hey im looking into a raid array on my pc. Would a cheap raid card from syba $20-$30 be better than my amd mobos raid array? My mobo offers the array that I want.

I'm actually using one and it performs almost the same as a mobo raid. The only difference is that if this card is PCI, you will lose the burst speed from the cache of your hard drive since the maximum speed of PCI is around 120mb/s, which is almost the same as your normal raid setup maximum speed.

I have a syba card and they are cheap POS. So, don't waste your money, (unless you want to buy mine :D ) If you want a REAL raid card you're going to have to spend hundreds of dollars, so I would settle for your onboard raid. I honestly think it's a tad overrated, but if you have two drives then why not? It's a free 0.0001 seconds less boot time.

If you're willing to spend that much, you're better off with a SSD.

Is one SSD hard drive the same speed as a 10000 rpm hard drive? If not whats the speed difference your talking about here?

http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3531 Read and be educated. RAID 10kRPM drives are still abhorrently slow compared to a single SSD with a quality low-latency controller. Sure you don't get a lot of space, but you could pick up a 60 or 120GB OCZ Vertex drive and a 640GB+ 7200RPM drive that would easily outperform a pair of 10kRPM drives. And be much quieter and cooler to boot.

What do you mean "...a single SSD with a quality low-latency controller"? What is a low-letency controler?

Basically any SSD that doesn't use the JMicron JMF602/JMF602B. Most drives use this controller unfortunately - your only really safe bets are any Intel SSD or OCZ's Vertex series.

I have two raptors in raid and it's more of a placebo effect than anything I can really notice.
