I currently have 2 gigs of DDR2 (5-5-5-31) Kingmax. Relatively cheap stuff. I was thinking of getting 4 gigs of some much better RAM, or at least better than what I have now. I have Windows XP. How much of the RAM will Windows detect? Is it worth the upgrade?

Specs: E5200, ATI 4830, P5N-E SLI, 500 Watt Antec Basiq

Well is it 32 or 64 bit xp?

64bit can detect 128GB (i think)

32bit can detect 3.25GB (approx, depends on ur gpu ram)

Short answer is you'll detect about 3 and a quarter with XP 32 bit and 4 gig with XP 64 bit. In terms of the performance benefit you might see, depends on a number of factors such as what you do with your PC and its other specifications. If you are expecting significantly improved framerates in your games as the result of adding another 2 gig you likely won't see it in most configurations.

you can upgrade if you find it cheap enough, but remember that xp uses much less ram than vista does. it isnt necesary to have more than 2 gb of ram on any xp system, short of an xp pro 64bit workstation, but if your using it for that, then you should probably upgrade to vista anyways. but having four gigs would give you the room to upgrade to vista or windows 7 if you wanted. with your system, i would say don't bother. you probably wont notice the difference

You still left out the rest of the system's specs and what you use it for, but again you likely won't see a framerate increase in games from another 2 gig if that's what you are looking for. -Byshop

32 OS detects 4GB. I have 4GB right now on my 32bit but the 4GB includes other device addresses so available will not actually be 4GB but the OS does have a limit of 4GB, we get that straight.

On mine with 512MB card I get 3.5GB available which is more than enough for every game on the market.
