if u have a motherboard that supports lets say ddr400 and u have some old slow pc100 ram, can they be compatible?

Yes it will work.  It's comparable to say, a highway has a  top speed of 55 mph, Your car only goes 35 mph, you can drive on the road.  However if you had a car that went 75, you would only be able to travel 55 due to the limit of the road.  Make sense?
