hey, i just got vista ultimate and am thinking of upgrading my ram. currently i have a 1gb DDR2 ram, amd athlon x2 3800+ and a gf 7600 gt. right now i can only afford to buy a 512 mb stick. so my question is, is the 512 mb ram upgrade gonna help with vista and the latest games? and is a 512 mb stick even gonna be compatible with my system? my mobo can take up to 4gb of ram btw. thanks for the help.

Well, for now 1GB should be fine, at least long enough for you to save up for another 1GB stick. It's not the end of the world if you don't have 2GB of ram, Vista's not as much of a memory hog as people make it out to be.

Just get a ready boost compatible usb flash drive for now untill you can afford more ram. It's much cheaper.

what is your budget, and what kind of memory are you running? If you are running PC2-5300, I would recommend these memory modules. Here is the URL for an extra Gig: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134045 And here is the URL for an extra 512 MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134044 The reason I really like Kingston ValueRAM is because I've heard that it was good for overclocking, and I have only found 1 motherboard that wasnt compatible.

Assuming your current 1gb RAM is provided by 2x 512mb DIMM's, the first thing to do would be to check your motherboard manual and see if the system will even boot with 3 DIMM's installed, as some won't. Secondly, having 3 DIMM's installed means you'll lose the dual-channel RAM function, although this doesn't impact Athlon 64 based system too badly, but it's something to think about.

Well, currently i have 1 1GB Kingmax DDR2 PC4300 stick. and the main reason i want to upgrade is because my fps for games like CS:S and Half-life 2 has fallen a little bit ever since i switched to vista. As far as my budget goes, i can only afford up to $45 Can (about $40 US) since i am not working right now. And if readyboost is a reasonable solution then please tell me what i need to look for in a USB stick for it to be compatible.

If I were you I would buy a usb flash drive for ready and save up for the RAM. I have 2gb of ram in my computer and got a deal on a 4gb Sandisk cruzer flash drive for $40 dollars. I am using 3.79 gb for ready boost and it has noticably increased my performance in Vista and I see about a 7 to 10 fps increase when playing Supreme Commander.  I would imagine with less ram that the benefits of ready boost would be even more noticable.

That's cheaper than a 512 stick. 20 bucks or so for a 1gig flash drive.

Readyboost is nowhere near as good as standard RAM.

Exactly, buying a ReadyBoost compatible USB flash drive instead of actual RAM is a terrible idea. ReadyBoost essentially just gives you a faster pagefile.
