Ok, well Razer announced that in q4 2011 they will have a headset that is actually 7.1(uses 10 individual drivers).

I personally want to see how well it works, so ill probably buy one, and if its not better for games than my akg 702s ill prob give away.

Here some pictures:

I like Razer, but these won't come close to being worth it.

There is a slight chance that it may be better for positioning due to the sheer amount of drivers in the headset. However, with so much crammed into the headset, there is no doubt that sound quality will take a backseat in the development of the headset.

I've looked at a bunch of reviews on these types of cans and they rated very slightly higher for positional sound however even the very lowest Senns wipe the floor with them on sound quality. As for your AKGs they aren't the best as AKGs have a tendency to reveal all the defects in a recording and games tend to use highly compressed sound, Audio-Technicas are famed for their positional sound and aren't too harsh on compressed sound (though they'll still make 128kbs MP3s sound flat)

Many headset manufacturers have done the discrete driver thing before. It's generally regarded as inferior to a quality stereo set of headphones with a HRTF binaural surround filter, and your very AKG K 702s are said to synergize very well with the likes of CMSS-3D Headphone and Dolby Headphone once they're amplified properly, even moreso than the usual Audio-Technica AD700 or AD900. Oh, and on top of that, Razer's own Megalodon (basically a Carcharias with a USB DAC/DSP soldered in-line) uses the HRTF binaural approach. I also noticed that they're making a "2.2" version of the Tiamat that lacks the in-line control and is definitely 3.5mm, which suggests that the Tiamat 7.1 is USB. Not much use to those with good sound cards already...you'd think that they'd make another 7.1 version with extra 3.5mm TRS leads to get surround sound that way.

I think it's great that more companies are trying to emulate the surround sound experience using headphones, and I would urge users not to pass judgment on a product that hasn't even been released. It's designed for video games and movies, so I wouldn't expect them to perform anything like the AKG K702s, and that is neither a good nor bad thing. Too often quality is confused with performance.

The Tritton AX Pros are one of the only "real" retail surround sound headphones that use discrete drivers of this design (the only ones widely available, anyway), but they are 5.1, not 7.1. They use a different driver design and positioning, as well (see picture). By comparison the Tiamat's drivers are HUGE; a 40mm driver is usually all you see in even the biggest headphones, so it'll be interesting to see how heavy these are, though I expect some serious kick for bassheads. Thanks for the heads-up.

Happy gaming,

Boz
