I personally prefer believability, realism doesn't have a place in certain genres like DnD but that doesn't stop other such fantasey worlds from being set up in a believable manner. Realism can actually limit your creativity because something sounds too unrealistic to implement, realism is the reason games are obsessed with real = grey and brown these days.

Realism. it adds an effect to the game where a guy is in a little shack, and you can just blow the shack to pieces with the guy inside of it, adds a whole new style of gameplay.

I tend to see fantasy as having a bit of realism in them

That could be believability though.

Realism is part of or a means to create believablility. or as long as it's believable, it's a work of realism. Middle Earth, the realms, and Star Wars universe, though fantasy, are belivable, they're all works of realism.

the only extreme "realism" I can think of in terms of "gaming" are genuine sims: flight sim and combat sim. In combat sim, "real" combat, there's no place for blood pack or regnerating health. got shot, you die or hurt to the point you cannot fight anyway. anything with health potion in gaming is in the realm of believablility (artistic realism, not simulating reality).

believability.

between the two options, it's the only one that's truly limitless.

Ive never been a big fan of realism. i like to believe the world that im playing, even if its a bit unrealistic. in fact, half-life is a prime example of this.

You hit the nail right on the head. If I had the resources, I'd create a sort of sci-fi FPRPG where you're the first and only human to land on a war-torn planet, and the only thing making your life any sort of easy there is your powered armor suit. Since the rest of the inhabitants don't speak any sort of human language, the suit has to translate it all for you. Also, every single entity in the game would have a very detailed damage model; in your case, the armor can stop weaker projectiles, but stronger ones might pierce the outer shell and damage some of the suit's various subsystems, or worse-injure the wearer, which can affect your stamina, your mobility and accuracy if shot in the limbs, etc. Many of the vehicles are aircraft, and depending on where they are hit, their flight characteristics will change. Buildings can be destroyed with enough firepower. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that. The point is that it couldn't possibly be realistic, since we don't actually know of any other sentient species on distant planets, nor do we have powered armor suits at the moment. However, it is believable because what happens in this game would occur in what might be considered a realistic fashion. Understand what I'm trying to get at here?

Hollywood film techniques is the reason games are obsessed with grey and brown these days. Please understand that those are color filters to make the image quality much more interesting then default colors.

This question doesn't make sense. Realism implies believability and vice-versa. I'll take realism over fun in games any day. whether it's strategy, FPS, flight sim, etc. Unfortunately the fun factor sells games and most players are really casual players so game developers don't see much sense in making realistic games that would appeal to 5% of gamers.
