Having had one pc (old Hp one) die and then borrowing a pc from a friend which had loads of BSODs, i think its time to build my own. However I have a super tight budget £150-200 maxium. Would or should I say CAN I build a decent rig for that price. Or would it be easier and cheaper to find a fairly good pc on ebay and upgrade from there.

No, you can't build anything for that price. Best off saving up a bit - remember the main issue when upgrading in drips and drabs is compatibility. Splash out on a decent mobo if buying this way, or buy end of old line technology as it drops in price over coming months(there's a raft of new standards coming in). That way you should be fine for non-enthusiast gaming for a while.

Well that is about $370 canadian right? you can build a system for that, a few things to consider. I hope you already have a monitor. also any complete sytem for that much money wont even have a video card, the video card I just bought cost $600. so what do you want to use the system for?? do you want to game with it and what games do you play, if your playing cs 1.6 you dont really need much of a video card. Let us know what you what you want ie, intel based, amd, video card or not ect. The best performace/money would be a system a little over $490 Canadian which is about 255 pounds.

Slap on another £100's to that budget then you'll get some feedback, the budget you have wouldn't even get you a low-end gaming system.

This is as low as I can go for you if you want a gaming setup:

Its from www.overclockers.co.uk

Thanks for the feedback guys. Basicly I want simular specs to the pc I had before. I wont be playing the latest games. I think the most ill be playing are games like C&C Generals and Simcity Socities.

The specs (before it died)

AMD Althon 64 3500+ (2.2Ghz)

2Gb of DDR2 (upgraded from 1Gb)

80Gb maxtor harddrive

x2 Optical drives, DVD Rom and DVD RW+

Nivida 5700+ (128mb)

Asus motherboard (I think it was an A87 model)

Asus Silver case.

If I can get better stuff than these for simular price, then what bits should I replace.

So just find out which part of the system was causing the BSODs (your local pc repair place should be able to help you out), and spend your money on upgrading that part. You should be able to get yourself a very nice graphics card for the money.

I tried that, they said they couldnt find the cause. Whatever config they tried it would still BSOD. They asked me if i wanted to replace off the stuff but I didnt have enough money, also I've given it back to my friends dad.

Oh right, well a new graphics card will give you the most notable boost for games (you have a pcie slot, right?). Spend a fair bit on this and you should be future-proofed for a while. It's not worth replacing anything else until you've got a new motherboard, at which point you'll need a complete overhaul as compatibility is going to be an issue.

I dont have that pc anymore. I believe its sitting in pieces in my mates room. Thats why I was asking if it was better to build my own or buy one from ebay and upgrade it.

All I can say in your situation is to be patient and save up some money. You cant expect to game with a good build if you dont have the cash man. This seems like a case of impatience. If you have the money, fine, but you dont even have the cash for it. We all have to suck it up for a little while to save up money. If you rush and build a crappy PC now, you're just throwing your money away. Patience is a virtue.

you might be able to build something that can surf the net and write word documents, that's about it.
