Hey everyone I already have somewhat of a gaming pc well it was like 5 years ago lol. It has 1 gig of ram, an intel celeron 2.8 gig proccesor, I have an Nvidia bfg geforce 6800, and a crappy mobo. I dont know a whole lot about buildin pcs but I would like to buy a new mobo that supports pci-e x16 and a new proccesor for it. I will also then need a new power supply, and fan. Then eventually I would like to get a new video card possibly a geforce 8800gt. I dont wanna break the bank on this one but I understand this stuff is pricey Im looking to spend around 400-500 on everything does this sound reasonable any suggestions on good mobos/processors/videocards? thanks.

ddr2 ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227089 good set of ram for the price you will need new ones because your old one's are most likely ddr 1 instead of 2

motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059 great board overclocks well

processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116036 its decent at stock speeds but it overclocks really well you could probaly hit 3ghz easy im not really an expert at overlocking so if just ask around someone will help you on that

powersupply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104954 as long as your not running sli this is all you really need and from what ive heard fsp makes good powersupplies

video card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150264 great video card and from what ive seen on benchmarks droping down to 256mb doesn't that make that much of a difference

total for all of this is $493

actually right now the 8800gt is better than that one if you want to spend extra get the 512mb version of the 8800gt

he could but the timing is awful and if he does choose to overclock which he's most likely going to have to do becuase he's on a budget id stick with the ocz

Mine is running perfectly at 6-6-6-18. Im getting no lags and it is VERRY fast.(may be because i used to use old DDR before i got my new comp.)

of course its going to run smooth and no lag timing doesn't help with that its only really helps with overclocking which if he does do which is kind of a must he'll want lower timing

Those are bad timings, and also, running a single stick cuts the memory bandwidth in half because it's not running in dual channel.

About the video cards, the 8800GT 256mb is great for low resolutions and low AA, but don't expect it to run as well as an HD3870 in high resolutions and with lots of AA.

If 200$ is your price range, the 8800GT 256 is good. But if you can spend more, get the HD3870 or the 8800GT 512mb.

Also master shake is right, with that processor and motherboard you could overclock ALOT and get a ton more performance, but you'll need fast memory with low timings to make that work, so that's another reason to stick with the OCZ or another similar pair of modules.
