OK my computer is pretty old now it has a socket 462 motherboard with and AMD Athlon +2800 processor but it recently broke and it worked pretty awsome before. All I'm asking is what can I build for $400 dollars I have a mid sized case already and the cd drives and my xp cd so all i really need is the processor video card motherboard and harddrive. I want to use this for internet and light gaming not the newest games but you know the semi new ones NOT CRISYS!!!

With that old of a PC you probably will need a new motherboard, new graphic card, new processor, new power supply unit, and probably more ram.

You might as well build a new one.

so you'r not looking into diablo 3 ? at max ? or Starcraft II at high graphic ? or max / far cry 2 / ect. you should go Core e8400 + P45 + 9800GT
OR a HD4830 if you can have it for same money or 4850 / 260GTX if you think il start to play some 2008 / 2009 Games
then if it only 2006 game you want to play and if you want a psu that last long for longtime it said the PC&cooling Silencer 750wats is pure epic it even hold Two 4870x2 = Crossfirex + A core i7 975 : overclocked at 5.2Ghz

IT SO STRong and stable For a power supply that i wonder how the hell. tough it does the psu is around 120$US After MIR And could last you a good 5 Year before Lose 10% of is Wattage Per hour if you still consume lot of eletrcity by then

I could do you a upgrade for 400$ like you say. just taking a mobo + processor + ram since ur are proabely DDr1 Right ?! not DDR2 : SO you need those not expensive otugh if the most inexpensive part of a pc from 30-50$ you get Extremely good ram by a set of 2x2GB such
as : COrsair dominator II DDR2 : 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 2x2GB for 37$ AFTER 40$MIR claim newegg.com
E8400 for : around 155$ : P45 for 105$ : + A video card it would fit in you'r around price :"

tough you may need a new psu which would may add to another 100$ unless you cheap out on the video card or the motherboard for some Pseudo P35 / P43
but having a good Qualtiy psu is Essential to rpevent you to upgrade every year : if your case good and everthing then so far all you'l change in future
is mobo / processor / ram / video card

yet what so good with e8400 you can easly get it 3.6ghz itwith a good cpu cooler according ur case a good Exhaust & intake as simialry case as Antec 900 / CM 690 / NZXT apollo / Guardien + A good CPu Cooler Which is around 30-50$ : the more expensive the more reliable in most of case
such as thermalright 120 True or Cooler master V8 But those can be buy later tough when you install them you must remove the motherboard from the case
and do it on the table in order to grip it smoothly and tight and put some high quality thermal-paste to the heasink / cpu for Great heat dissipation

While it might be possible to buy all of that for under $400, you would be sacrificing a lot. The quality of parts you would have to buy to get under $400 would probably mean your new PC will break faster then your old one. I'm not saying you need to be spending $1000 but even just getting up to $600 will make a big difference. With that extra money your looking at a E8400 and a HD4870.

2.0GHz dual core + cheap MB + 2GB memory = $180

9800gt = $125

decent PSU + 250Gb Hard Drive = $100

or at last 480-500$ like iv said Andyjl: and 9800gT 125$? that not for usa cause iv seen 4830 for 100$ after MIR or 105$
but if he need a new hard drive it sure err sata he need if is not sata and he need a new psu so if you want high quality part topic creator
try to understnad waht i said was i clear ?

like if you spend instead ofa 50-60$ cheap 450-500 wats psu you get one of 750wats taht last you 5 year so you don't change it : then you put new machine in future such as Core i7 Westmere / SandyBridge : current is Bloomfield which will be far inferrior of newest generation by then you change a pc once more

A PSu of 750wats can be 120$-140$ After mir in huge sales time
+ a hard Drive of longlifespawn + huge quality : the samsung F1 TB : 100$ : if you desire it is FAST for load game / boot up window vista as a 10,000 RPM Raptor
But Slower by a small % then Velociraptor (the 160GB / 300GB of Western digital of 200-300$
A good cpu is E8400 140$ - 165$ + A Great quality mobo the P45 Such as gigabyte UD3 Series Specialy the UD3R / UD3P for 95$-115$

then y u need a gpu for Quality gaming in the game you desire if To play Cause you will playingg on 1280x1024 So a good HD4830 / HD4850 / HD4870 /
and you'r in the gaming for a longtime for a good enough quality for what you want to do
the Video card mention start from 100$ to 220$ (For 1GB veriosn of 4870)
Current price know of 4830 / 100-120$
current price know of 4850 / 125-150$ from ebay to newegg.com and other website
Curertn price know of 4870 / 130-150$ on ebay and 170$ AFTER MIR as lowest price on newegg.com and other website

You can harvest more money in order to have a 500$-600 PC Of Enough high quality If you aren't 11 year old and can have a job or money from w/e way you get it ;) So Think about it

forget the case and video card 9600GT SUCK oh and the socketr am2 cpu you taken is weakr then : E6100 Stock speed (^^)
and rosewill psu 1/2 of them broke to RMA / And as Being the Culprit of Random system crash for 75% of thet ime
the psu and amp are so weak that card as 260GTX or higher end up causing ur system crash with there psu i heard over 1000 2 star review
cause of failure with all rosewill psu

and the processor ? I MEAN common ? IT 2005 Technology That is even beaten by E2180 at 2.9ghz + overclock
how ever : the 7750X2 can match a E5300 overclocked to 1/2 of it overclocking potential with a decent water cooling system or air high voltage

You know what your not the only one who wants to spend just that much and no more cause I'm in the same boat but my current pc is still runing ok but I'm still going to build my self a pc and I'm going to try and keep it under or around 500.00. Currenly I have around 300.00 and I'm going to go and look around at newegg and see what all they have. At the moment I'm looking for a farly cheap mobo to go with my E8400 cpu and I think I'm going to stay with a p43 not unless I can find a cheap P45 mobo and then I may go for it. I'm alos stuck on the os trying to figure out wich one to get Vista or XP again. Far as gaming goes wich is better Vista or XP?

Isn't the GSO weaker than a 9600gt? without overclocking... i know with overclocking they are fairly similar... Good build if you could just replace that 9600GSO with my HD4830

The 9600GSO's extra memory helps makeup for the slower clockrates. But the 9600gso isnt no sloth ethier, it can play crysis with a mix of medium and mostly on high settings at 1440x900 or lower resolutions. And the OP said he didnt want a Crysis killer but this Pc will do the job thou.

Is the 2gb memory ddr2 800mhz? Or is it DDR memory? Just look at either of our builds and take out the things you don't need... it's not hard

Intel is much better clock for clock, there is a fairly large difference in gaming, although AMD make far from bad processors, intel have just been ahead of the game this time around. If you can get both for the same money go with a Intel system

The kit I posted with the X2 6000 has no trouble with games and programs. And most likely you need start new and that kit has everything you need besides a OS.

So you only need a motherboard, PSU, CPU, and GPU, right? Try this:

Gigabyte GA-EP45

E7400

ATI Radeon 4830

$325+shipping and handling.

EDIT: I forgot about the PSU. This is one area where you don't want to go cheap, you're better off getting an E5200 and a high-quality PSU than an E7400 and a mediocre quality one. Here's a few decent ones:
Antec Earthwatts 380

Corsair 450w

Thermaltake 430w

04carhee why you want peopel to buy 6000x2 that much ? it inferrior of intel i know you'r amd fanboy but it weaker. Phenom II is the only thing i respect of AMD cause they getting strong this spring with 990 : tough it may cost 450-500$

ain't those wattage are psu you may need to change in the next 2-3 year tough bluebird ts ? Well I guess it enough but i know one that last long and powerufll according a core i7 975 3dmark run
it went with two 4870x2 ? + A Core i7 975 : 5.2Ghz + It really interresting it shown that the Silencers of 750wats is Uber Fantastic for long durability and high quality psu that last until is wattage drop by 10-15% after Several year and that it end up you have not enough juice tough it uncommon and i'm not even sure the life spawn before it lost is wattage per hour but seem huge of ever since he can't strech higher then 400$ I guess he as to being cheap on processor and psu

For the price they are great cpu's, And for what the the OP wants in a pc it fits. I also recommend other intel or AMD cpus to people depending on their budgets.

i would go with intel better peformance clock for clock and they are great overclockers get a decent dual core with a good cooling fan and u can reach 3.6ghz easy far better then any of the amd dual cores im afraid :(

they only thing i would reccomend anyone from amd at this point would be the phenom II 940

maybe Carraher but unless amd put there 7780x2 for 55$ : they ain't good as intel mobo P43 80$ + E5200 73$ + Overclocking Tough it would be nice if intel cut price of E7200/7300 to 90$ and E8400 to 140$ Standard price
