My budget is $150, could I still get an effective graphics card for my desktop at that price? If so, what would you recommend?

Look into the AMD HD 6850 or maybe the HD 7770 or a HD 6870 for $160

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561

Probably worth the extra $10!

Thanks. :D Just what I was looking for.

But I have a slight problem, my desktop case has metal strips that goes in between the slots of the video card; only allowing the size of one like this, at least I think.

15-116-021-S02?$S300W$

compared to...

14-150-561-Z02?$S300W$

this which is double the size. Will it matter?

Still don't get it? Here's a picture that's similar

computer-case-back.jpg

That metal strip above the video outputs.

Think you will need a single slot card, such as this one:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500256

or this one:

Ok, much appreciated. I'm guessing the first one you mentioned is better?

It's a shame, since they're both much worse than the double slot cards mentioned earlier in the thread. Can't you cut the case or something?

That or if you cant get a case search for 7750. You can find alot of single slot 7750's such as this one. Much faster than either 640 or 6670 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150612

True but then again you can find 7850's in Us as low as $180 if you consider to go overbudget

what you mean compatible ? you mean performance ? Well it will run most games at high settings at 720p . It will even run alot of games with a mix of medium/high settings on 1080p

I think that metal strip's normal. My case has one and it hasn't stopped me installing dual slot cards. From those mentioned above, I'd definitely splash out the extra $10 for the 6870.
