Errr... If you get an aftermarket cooler, there is now way you could overclock with such high temps effectively.
I really don't mean to go offtopic but do you really need an upgrade ? The 8800gts is still a great card that can run anygame well, UNLESS you run games at a super high resolution I recommend that you just wait. The only game you might not be able to run on high because of resolutions(if yours is even that high) is crysis and even the new one is going to be less demanding.

There is nothing wrong with the cooler. It's the lack of software fan control. In the time I had mine I overclocked it (stable) to 680/1075, which isn't bad from stock (625/986). That's on the stock cooler with no noticible temp increase. Go for the HD4850/70 at this point in time. These results were obtained with the fan speed locked at 22%.

I need to buy a new video card before this explodes its too hot.

I need to buy a new video card before this explodes its too hot.PS2_PC_FANIf it runs to hot then you can always buy a $35-$40 aftermarket cooler because no card for $200 is really going to be worth the increase your getting espically since your only problem is heat. If you must get a new card then get a 8800GTS 512MB because from what ive heard, there coolers are very good

Yeah, I can max out all my games with that card at 1280x1024 (even full AA) and get 40 fps minimum.
Haven't tried Crysis yet though.
4850 has crap for overclock potential. It runs hot and just plain doesnt overclock well, even with our high airflow setups.
For overclocking potential, I'd reccomend a 9800GTX or a GTX 260.
In Triple SLI (which usually has worse overclocking than single cards), we got the 9800GTX to 850mhz+ core clock (from 675 stock). The Triple SLI GTX 260s went from 576 stock (tho our EVGA cards came clocked at 602 stock for some reason) to 768mhz, and we were only limited by the shader clock at that point.
The HD 4850 on the other hand... barely went anywhere...

No need to overclock it, at stock it performs better than the 9800GTX XXX edition, while being cheaper and consuming less power.
Well, the topic is about overclocking headroom and by association, overclocking performance. I have little doubt that a properly overclocked 9800GTX will completely smash the HD 4850.

Prove it. Be careful you might fry it.
Hmm... only benches I have archived of overclocked 9800GTXs are in triple-SLI, it wouldn't be fair to compare those against the HD4850 (only have benches in single and double crossfire mode). 9800GTX OC'd in single mode is kinda on my to-do list, but i'm not really sure when i'll get around to it.
Here's the 9800GTX Tri-SLI 3dmark Vantage score Without PhysX drivers.

srry on Nvidia guys.
y would u go nvidia? the 4850 beats out the 9800 gtx and the 4870 is close if not better then the gtx 260 and gtx 280 for alot less. sltough what rez do u game at u might want to think about gettinga bigger display instead of upgrading video card or do both for that matter.
8800GT $129 at newegg.com Overclocks 125mhz (core) easy (you need to crank up the fan a bit. I run 80% all the time. Graphics cards were designed to run 100% all the time so it doesn't void a warrenty and if the fan breaks you just send it in). Anything more requires some voltmods and extra cooling which gives you alot of head room. I think I've seen people do 800mhz which is a 200mhz overclock. I step-up'd from a 8800GTS 320mb for $10 and the extra Vram was amazingly helpful (usually you wouldn't think so). It helped run WiC at close to maxed rather than medium-low that the GTS ran. Also runs crysis much better than the GTS. GT is quite an improvement over the GTS 320mb.
*Edit*
I heard the hd4850 ran some good benchmarks (of coarse the benchmarks were EXTREMELY biased and didn't have the 8800GT overclocked at all and cosidering it can overclock 200mhz), but it's also $100 more so it's really your decision. Personally, I love my 8800GT. I couldn't imagine getting it for $100 now (8800GTS 320mb was $250ish?). You really can't go wrong, but if you are interested in the hd4850, I'd at least wait until there are some legit benchmarks that take in consideration everything.
