also team fortress was originally a mod for quake, but then it was ported to the half life game engine. do you mean the half life version of team fortress or the very first release?
I own Team Fortress Classic. Sorry I don't know exactly what you're asking. I want older ones because then I know they'll run with my computer. It might sound stupid, but that's me.

team fortress classic is the half life game engine port i was talking about. other games you would like are quake 1, 2, and 3 (you can get them all in one package called ultimate quake) counter strike, half life (must play for anyone who claims to be a pc gamer, unreal 99 (i dunno if people still play)
Quake 3 is grasping on by a thread. The servers are few. Yet they are full of... those Quake gamers. I wake up in the middle of the night just thinking of the pure pain playing against them causes. Man was that the most freaking awesome game ever.
Counter-strike though! That is played like crazy. So is Wolfenstien enemy territory. Plus consider that thats a free game and technically one of the most played FPS games out there.
Does it really have to be multiplayer FPS? If not you could have a look at deus ex and system shock 2, but they are more fps-rpgs... great nonetheless.
It's not exactly an FPS (well it is, but it's more like Bioshock or even Deus Ex) -- but System Shock 2 is a very good game as well which was released around or before Half-Life (probably before).

You'd still be able to run it fine if you can run Half-Life though. And it's a really good game to boot.
Jedi Knight, perhaps? :) (1997 I believe). I think it's actually pretty similair to HL in terms of gameplay. Just imagine the crowbar being able to bounce back bullets! :P But seriously, the lightsaber is used in a similair way as the crowbar in the sense that it's often the key to solve "puzzles". The lightsaber combat isn't particularly spectacular in this installment, but the game is great nonetheless. (if you can look past the outdated graphics....man, it looks almost exactly like Dark Forces, I think).
