I need a significant upgrade over my GTS 250. I want a card that will enable me to max most anything handily. Price is generally not an issue. Recommend away!

Or how about four, and just have the other two lying on top of your case so your computer will become faster with the sheer power radiating from the other two 5970s!

If you're really gonna upgrade, I say wait around for Nvidia's DX11 cards. The 250 is still a pretty good card, and it's only a few months to wait.

Well, I would like to upgrade around Christmas. Is the 5970 generally considered the best card around? I certainly wouldn't be opposed to running a pair in Crossfire (which my mobo supports). Also, is it DX11 ready?

5970 is the fastest single (that is single slot) card there is at the moment, and it is a dx11 card. Im not sure if you can find it at the moment, should be able to get one by christmas I would think though.

they are indeed overkill, i personally would never buy a card at that price. my max would be 250-300 and any card around that price could max any game, but if you have the money to burn they why not.

What res do you run and what cpu do you have? Maybe it's not your card that's the problem.....

Wait till Fermi, they'll be cheaper than the 5970. Don't know if you can use a DX10/11 hybrid cards in SLI, or even have the 250 as a Physx card due to the DirectX difference. Just wait for Fermi I say.

Meh, it would be a Christmas present, so I am not actually going to have t spend anything. If Fermi is really that good, I will have no qualms buying that at a later date. Thanks for the help guys!

I wouldn't recommend it, if he has an LGA 1366 I'd say get 3, if not 2 or 1. Especially when he doesn't know what Nvidia 's gonna bring.

5970 is a dual GPU solution so you can't quad them... you'd have to get 2 max.

But thats quad CF anyway. 2 GPU's on each board CF'd then CF the cards themselves.

current max gpu power is Crossfire X 5970 (2x2GB 5970 i know someone with that setup) And I doubt of Current Motherboard Wtihout Lucid Hydra 200's to be having 4x 5870(4x1GB) Beating Crossfire X 5970(2x2GB)

Also when lucid hydra 200's there a good chance putting somethings as HD5970 + A 250GTS gaining power over having just HD5970 but currenyl in test it was shown HD4890 + 260GTX : the 260GTX was Improving performances over having simply a 4890

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=815&type=expert
but the fact it could be put Togher is a revolutionary progress In Gaming PC even tough nvidia does really being horrify by such method

this is not a source.. nvidia GPU aren't proof to be faster yet then 5970 specially on single card aspect so it up to you topic creator you can wait Fermi and see if it don't deceive us or get HD5970 for 600$ (the power of TWO HD5870)

But even so you'd be having Insane performances with a HD5870 over a 250GTS because even if you ad 3-way sli 250GTS it is Behind 4870x2 ;)
But 5870 is the power of one 4870x2 with DX11 and 2x less the TDP : 5970 is a X2 version of HD5870 of it

so it consome near a 4870x2 but 2x the power of 4870x2 it basically a Quad sli 295GTX :P it Does have Lot of power

The 5970 is not a 5870x2... it has the clock speeds of a 5850 and the SP's of a 5870. a 5870x2 would be faster.

And, the source isn't talking about current Nvidia GPU's.

The 5970 can be easily overclocked to 5870 levels, its only clocked the way it is for power consumption reasons. Also, your source is not a source.

Well yeah it get OC easy and it perform on the same scale as 2x 5870 : but anyway i doubt of 3-4x 5870 to really use it current power without Lucid Hydra 200's which should be Exclusive to core i7 / Core i5 for the moment then maybe go on-ward with AM3 motherboard

but if the TC go with 3x 5870 i think it would cost him 400x3 beside of it being rare to find : the other would be 600USx2 (MAX ATI GPU performances) and there only few motherboard which can run 4-way 5870 such as the most expensive motherboard of EVGA X58 and it not being benchmarked yet did it ? haven't saw 3-way 5870 either ? i should search a bit more
