I'm planning on adding a 100-ish GB SSD for my desktop. When it comes to SSD I'm rather clueless about the brands. What are some of the best SSDs around this range, and what are some of the most affordable ones?

Crucial is a good brand. The easy way is to see the rating on Newegg. Obviously OCZ is pretty bad, but, cheap.magicalclickOCZ is not bad its better then the majority but the newer ones are more reliable then the first ones. My first choice would be OCZ, crucial, and mushkin SSD's.
Intel SSDs have always been and still are the best. Don't go by advertised specs, go by user reviewers. Just look at how many 1 egg ratings the Vertex 3 has. I'm still using my Intel 320 without issue
The ONLY thing that matters is reliability. Pretty much every SSD today has similar performance and you'll only notice a difference in synthetic benchmark results.
