I'm looking for a headset (with mic) for use with my rig and since I don't know jack about headsets I'm hoping someone can help me out, what I'm looking for:

High-Quality (not top of the line or anything, but good)
preferably USB, last headset I had (almost a decade ago) had the two seperate jacks I didn't like
not sure what price's are like but I'm hoping for under $80 Canadian
I'd preder to order from Amazon.ca
Doesn't need to be compatible with anything else, I have seperate headsets for my consoles and music players, this one's totally for PC gaming.
anything else you need to know?

Thanks in advance

thought headphones and headsets were considered seperate things, my bad

The headsets recommended in the FAQ are:

  • Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset(~$40) - dosen't look very good to me
  • Beyerdynamic MMX 2(~$80) - actually $100-$120 AND not avaiable in Canada :(

anyone got a different recommendation for $80?

EDIT: anyone know about these:

Sennheiser PC 151 Binaural HeadsetReviews are promising and it's $80 canadian but no usb

SteelSeries Siberia V2My brother has one and likes it but I'm not sure about the quality of the mic and that it's white which I'm not wild about

Logitech G35more than I want to spend but they sure do look slick, worth the $120?

The logitechs are really good. the G35 is probably your best bet.

Mind you, a USB powered headset will never hold a candle to a really good set of cans + amp or decent sound card. But I loved my G35's (and later G935's) until I settled on my current Sennheisr head set + Asus audio card.

I cannot recommend a separate headphone and mic highly enough if you're going pure PC. If you don't like running cables to the rear of your PC, which I can understand, a 3.5mm male to female extension cable is very inexpensive (six feet is only a couple bucks on Amazon), and you'll be able to get a nicer pair of headphones. The JVC HARX700 is only $52 on Amazon.ca, leaving you plenty of budget to get a nice desktop mic, or you can get a used Labtec LVA7330 ($10 on Amazon.ca) and mod it to attach to your headphones as in this picture: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51dkfZdqdhL.jpg. I use the HARX700, and they are an exceptional value for the money. Also: Thanks for taking the time to review the sticky! :) Good luck, Boz

While I understand the superiority of a seperate headphone and mic, just can't beat teh conveience of the headset so I think I'm going with the logitech's

I don't know about the "without the two separate jacks" part, because the only pair I have with USB right now is 250$. I'd recommend a pair of Steelseries Siberia v2s - now that I think about it, those are USB, too.

I'm no audiophile, but I have the G35s and love them. I bought my little brother a pair so as well and the audio is great for both gaming and chatting at the same time. In fact, I use it a lot of business conferences when I'm working from home.

Sennheiser. Stay far away from any 'gaming' or 'PR0' headset.

Logitechs will prove out to be a better option.

Does it have to be USB? An internal sound card generally works out better than the external USB audio devices for PC gaming, though if you have no other choice, there are a few decent USB sound devices you can plug any headphone or headset of your choice into and get a few gaming features. If you must have a headset with an integrated mic, then the Sennheiser PC360 looks like the one to get. No, it's not cheap, but if you won't consider headphones with a ModMic, that's about the only quality option you'd find other than perhaps the closed-back PC350 and the Beyerdynamic MMX300.
