Depends on what you like. If you like games set in medieval times then Total War Medieval 2 is a great game. You can also wait a few weeks for StarCraft 2 to come out.

Dawn of War II sounds exactly like what you're looking for. Lots of action, not too complicated, and a great game.

Yes if by action packed the OP means sitting around for dozens of hours micromanaging 15 systems with an occasional battle that last 5 minutes somewhere in between...

I love that game, but it is like the exact opposite of everything OP requested...
