Star Control II.
Since I doubt you'll find the original ANYWHERE you can get it for free (its legal! don't worry, the developers even helped them make it) called "Ur-Quan Masters".
XCom: Enemy Unkown or XCom: UFO Defense (Same game, different names). I think you can get it for free legally, if not, you'll have to get it off an internet site somewhere like amazon or Ebay.

Great list, this will keep you busy for some time ;)
The only addition I can come up with is Doom (TNT, Plutonia), Doom 2, and that's only because in hindsight I didn't read the post completely. Seriously, just go through these games and you'll be oh so happy
Lol, all the games you guys have recommened are about 4-5 years old, sad that you consider those classics. As for my recommendation: Pong.
Heh no really: Chrono Trigger, metroid, super metroid, Double Dragon, Chrono Cross( a bit of a stretch), The legend of Zelda(original), Zork, Kings quest
Try:
No Ones Lives Forever 1 & 2 Monolith before they got all spooky-like.
Fallout 1 & 2
Mafia
Beyond Good and Evil Kinda weird, give it a try if you like adventure style games.
The Longest Journey Another adventure game. It's around $10 on steam.
Freespace 1 & 2 I'd suggest a torrent rather than off of the-underdogs.info because I believe the one from there doesn't have cinematics.
Knights of the Old Republic
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Take a look at the ID games on steam. There's some good stuff there.
Okay, I'm all outta ideas.

Although I agree its hard to call anything under 10 years old a classic, the OP asked for recommendations from 1997-2004.

omfg. dude...he said 1997-2004. your reading and comprehension skills are what i find sad.
system shock 2, deus ex, starcraft.

Quake 2 barely meets those requirements as a "classic" game.. I believe classics (in terms of gaming which evolves faster than music and any other form of artistic expression) should be given status at maybe 5yrs or more... Just remember the types of things we saw back in 2002.. MOHAA just came out.. now tell me games have gone beyond the Q3 engine.. :)
BattleZone II, 1998, It was awsome and unique, it gave 1st and 3rd person roles....
Also building a wall of gun towers was fun :D
Must-play games... hmmm...
Both Diablo games
Baldurs Gate 2. Must play. Maybe Icewind Dale 2. It has a better implementation of D&D ruleset. See why NwN and NwN 2 are so dissappointing to some people.
WC3 frozen Throne if you don't have it.
C&C Red Alert 2 and Yuri's revenge. Awesome C&C sprite action.
Any Civilization game.
ALPHA CENTAURI. Sid Meier classic. Better than civilization if you ask me, genius game.
Homeworld 2. This is the best space RTS ever created. Marvel at the excellence. Nothing has topped this masterpiece yet.
Jagged Alliance 2. It's like Silent Storm. If you liked that, you'll probably get a kick out of this. It's sort of a cult classic I guess.
Disciples 2, HOMM 4. Both good to kill time with.
Divine Divinity. Decent isometric Diablo like RPG. Strangely enough, the first is far more impressive than it's sequel.
Commandos 2. Classic game.
What's interesting about some of the later sprite based games is they can be run windowed, and still look pretty incredible. The 3d games from that time look like hell now unfortunately. I'm sure I forgot some classics, and I didn't mention stuff like Fallout and Fallout 2 because they look pretty pathetic compared to some of the other titles I've listed.
If you look around, there's alot of strategy games from late 90's/early 2k that provide some excellent gameplay, and look pretty decent at the same time, but were never really mainstream. I'd name some, but it's more fun discovering them for yourself I think :D
deus ex 1. its on steam for a tenner roughly....well worth playing if u havent done so already. best game ever made...ever imho.
osan0
One of the greatest and most underrated games in human history, ever!
Die by the Sword: It's utterly unique, but not for everyone. Use VSIM controls and rack up the dismemberments.
Thief 1/2: The first stealth-action games ever, but they're still the greatest, IMO.
I'll second those that said Battlezone 2 (well-crafted and unique, but not for everyone), Disciples 1/2 (warning: fun, addictive, and time-consuming), and Fallout 1/2 (has a theme song from the 1940's, the Bridge Keeper from Monty Python, crashed flying saucers, and allows you to become a porn star ... oh, and the gameplay's pretty good, too :D).
But there is one game you absolutely MUST play, and that is
System Shock 2
Best FPS I've ever played. Similar to but much better than Deus Ex. You may want to install the mod that stops weapons breakage, but ABSOLUTELY DO PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[QUOTE="8adk1d_16yo"]It's a good game but I like the first one better.BattleZone II, 1998, It was awsome and unique, it gave 1st and 3rd person roles....

thusaha
i thought the first battlezone was like 1998, and the second was early 2000s. I remember because Battlezone 2 had "pentium 3 optimization".
*nope, my bad....GS says they both (???) came out in 1999.
Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast!!!!
Edit: I also feel the need to reiterate that Freespace 1/2 and Ground Control are some great games to play. Freespace is good, it's one of the best Space Sims out there I think; Ground Control on the other hand is a very tactical RTS, it's fun but can feel very different from other games you've played.
The first Battlezone came out in 1998 and the second one came out in 1999.thusaha
I liked the one Atari made in wireframe.. back in the early 80s.. 1981 I believe.. The arcade version made you look through some niffty goggles to see the screen... and the controls were kinda awkward but worked well..
