System Shock 2

FEAR

Dead Space

Penumbra

Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth

STALKER (Has some parts that will freak you out. But its not all about the scary in this game)

Condemned Criminal Origins

Out of all of those. Penumbra will make you soil yourself. Dark Corners of the Earth comes in a close second though.

System Shock 2 is IMO the greatest horror game ever made for PC. I just finished Dead Space myself. While it is a great horror game in many respects, I found it to be very repetitive and it has a little bit of consolitis. Still, very good atmosphere and it does make you genuinely panicked at times.

Hows the graphics? Is it still ok enough to spook me?

Also I played Dead Space in PS3.

I second this statement. The Penumbra series is probably my all-time favorite horror games (although it may change once I complete a few more Silent Hill games). The whole atmosphere of the game just gives it a new level of creepiness. Dark Corners of the Earth is also really good. It has a bit more action to it, but it definitely has its horror moments as well.

When System Shock 2 came out, the graphics were pretty darn good. But the game is now 10 years old. I'd still recommend playing it though, just like I still recommend that people play the original Half-Life. It's good to play games that are truly standards of the genre.

Got RE5 in PS3, and its not even considered a horror game. Unlike the first 3. Sigh.

Yeah played AVP2, playing as the marine indeed makes your heart go fast. Playing as an Alien ora Predator doesnt anymore.

It isn't the graphics that make the game spooky, its the audio. Graphics are dated but passable... You can also check out Vampire: The masquerade - Bloodlines just for the Hotel...

No game has ever come close to penumbra in terms of the sheer terror i experienced while playing it. Dead Space, F.E.A.R and the first Stalker are good choices as well.

The Call of Cthullu ( not sure how you spell it... ). never played it, but i heard it's pretty creepy. if you're not adverse to the old stuff, you should try the Gabriel Knight trilogy as well.

Batman was already Gothic, lol. (Where do you think the name "Gotham" came from?) And for the game to fall under the "horror" genre it needs more than a few nightmare sequences. It has more to do with intent and the effective execution of that intent. Arkham Asylum doesn't try to scare or otherwise horrify you.

Oh my mistake I was under the impression it was from Bob Kane's desire for food when he was trying to come up with a name so when he asked his mistress in the cellar of his castle "Got ham?" when she offered him lunch then he came up with the name "Gotham!!" I beg to differ greatly. There is a deliberate decision to design the villains in particular in a much darker scarier way than that of the cartoon. The setting too is horrific given both its violent inmates and also its violent history. That is what makes it scary: the fact that the place was built for nutcases by a nutcase. The violence of it too adds to the horrific nature of the game.

It's very much like Batman Hush, the atmosphere and amount of violence and that was NOT a horror comic. The only difference is the location and it doesn't do enough to make it a horror. That's why you got so many questions when you said it was.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the game cannot possibly fall under "horror" simply because you are playing as Batman. You are playing as an object of fear to all the villains you face. No matter how twisted or violent they are, they are all scared of you. In horror fiction, things happen to the protagonists that they can't control... Batman walks into Arkham himself knowing full well it is a trap. He's not a victim to the machinations of the villains... Joker is not leading him on... he's merely doing what he has to do, inexorably moving to the final encounter. That's not a horror plot.
