Anybody know some good speakers for playing PC games such as Battlefield 3?

Would like the price to be around £50.

For £50 you'd be better off with headphones, I really don't think there are any good speakers for that price.

Hmm... How much do you think I'd need to spend for something worthwhile?

The best budget option would be a used amplifier and some good value hi-fi speakers. Wharfedale Diamond 9s can be bought for £40 a pair if you can find something to drive them with.

I have a 2.1 set from Creative Labs that is pretty damn good but unfortunately is kind of old and no longer sold. You might try having a listen to some.

Are you aware of any carriers that ship from the US to the UK? In Norway we have Jet Carrier. They send cargo via ship, by giving us a "fake" US address. pick up the item and send it via ship (costs $50 for up to 50kg, 50-100kg is like $70, 100-200kg is like $100)

I don't know any good speakers that are available in the UK at that price point. the US had a Dayton speaker/amp combo for $60 which is £40 or so, then add the cost of shipping isn't too much over your budget.

At least in Norway the cheapest decent speakers start around £80 (Argon)

Well then he should set his budget to sub £100. If he can find £50 speakers in the UK (of a decent brand mind you) there should be a view options in the £25-50 range for stereo amps. I mean the US has a couple of Lepai/Dayton amps that cost $25-30 USD.

That's what I noticed when looking (before I bit the bullet on my Denon), there are no cheap amps in the UK.

Not even on the used market? Amps from Rotel, NAD, etc.. you can usually find great amps for $50 in the US or £50 in Norway..

Any decent ones ended up selling for about £70 on ebay, I wasn't gonna spend £70 on something probably 20 years old that could break in a week.

What do you mean you couldn't find anything? there's dozens of great choices on the used market, mate..

There's always options if you look at old amplifiers. Sound quality hasn't improved since the analog days, so an amplifier from the 60s can sound just as good --- if not better than a modern one!

TC, I'm looking at you when I'm posting these, so check them out! If you can find your self a semi-decent pair of bookfshelf speakers in the sub £50 range then get one of these amplifiers:

Rotel current bid £5

Rotel starting bid £20

Rotel current bid £8

Rotel + Denon CD player current bid £12

Rotel BIN £30

Rotel BIN £35 or bid

Rotel starting bid £35

NAD BIN £45

NAD current bid £22

Cambridge BIN £50

$T2eC16NHJF0E9nmFQjL3BQgs2YswZw~~60_12.J

Now I'm going to assume you'll have to pay a lot more than those numbers up there, but I'm sure the owners will agree to a price under £50 so your stereo setup shouldn't exceed the £100 mark. These may be aged, but will sound better than any new crap you can buy today.

Use the analog outputs to connect to your PC/TV/console whatever.

Rotel is a great brand of amplifiers and their designs are pretty, really great sound for the buck. I'm sure there's more options, I found plenty of results just by searching for Rotel. Nad and Cambridge, 3 well known brands for delieverign high quality stereo products for a reasonable sum. There you go, you've got about a dozen to chose from. As I said, they'll all handle stereo sound better than any kind of junk logitech or so, and they'll even do a better job than entry level receivers.

As I said, bids went up a lot. I watched several promising amps and they all went to at least £70.

Anyway, I think my Denon was a good investment since I paid £250 plus £25 for a 5 year warranty for a reciever that cost more like £400 when it was released.

Which Denon receiver did you get? for my 7.1, I went with the Denon AVR 1911, I managed to get it for £270 new (in norway). Right now I think the only Denon receiver you can get for that price is the AVR 1513.

You guys are making him do too much work: He just wants to buy something with all the stuff he needs to plug it in and work, and sound decent. I agree he should probably go used to get the best value, but buying all the separate cables and knowing how to hook it all up to optimize it- it's daunting. NAD and Rotel are not common brands to gamers. Tell him to find a used Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system and be done with it. ;) Happy gaming, Boz

lol you just need RCA cables and put in any of the the analog L/R outputs labled "CD" "aux" etc and use cheap dollar speaker cables and plug in the back :p The Klipsch Promedia won't fit in his £50 budget. There's hard anything that will! just the Rotel and NAD aren't common names to gamers, but they should be :) well known in the audiophile community for great value.. and as they are used the value is up the roof.
